Local cyclist killed.

Very sad. This guy appeared to have been trying to navigate the junction across a busy local road (8 lanes width) and it appears the lights changed before he got across and a woman has been charged with GBH after she collided with him.
Original story
Update, sadly he's passed on...
I know this junction. I have walked and been driven around that area and in a car it scares the living hell out of me. I know that as a cyclist I would never attempt to ride the area, let alone the junction there - its just too unpredictable... makes me wonder if the cyclist had only just taken it up.

Sad story.
Southampton is probably the worst city that I have cycled in. The road system and attitude of the majority of drivers do not support the safety of cyclists. I only cycled there once, having caught the train down from London and then headed into the New Forest, but once was enough. I now stay on the train to Brockenhurst.0 -
Even using the ped crossings dont appear that safe - if your elderly you'll end up stuck halfway with the lights changing back, I'm told.
Does make me wonder if there will be a backlash - south today seemed transfixed on focussing on the "poor motorists" who'd become stuck in traffic. Many people locally dont seem to know their highway code either, thinking that cyclists arent allowed in certain areas - or atleast they seem to have forgotten it.0 -
Very unlucky.
I've used that junction loads, and I've never had a problem on it. I guess it goes to show that it only takes one bad driver, which is pretty scary.
Recently the cycle paths that help you to avoid riding on the road there have been closed at some point along them, so I've pretty much given up using them for now. I guess quite a lot of other people are the same.0 -
If motorist has been charged with GBH- then the police/ CPS must believe it was a deliberate attack on him, and not a motring "accident"/ incident
As it is- she has not been charged it seems from the story, but has been arrested on suspicion of GBH. The file is unlikely to have been passed to the CPS for a charging decision at this stage
It would be very very unusual for a motorist to be charged with GBH ( not unheard of though)Want to know the Spen666 behind the posts?

Now he's unfortunately died, I expect it will change to "death by dangerous driving"
I can only presume the GBH arrest was because the police suspected she deliberately drove AT him. Which is a very scary thought.Chunky Cyclists need your love too! :-)

My thoughts are: did she see the lights changing and not slow down at the junction, and thus the cyclist who got caught up ended up the way he did...? Or has she gone through a red..? :? I guess it will come out soon..
South today just said she's been released on bail.0 -
On reading 2nd story, it seems to me that police arrested for GBH probably because at that stage they couldn't arrest her for Death by dangerous driving. I would be suprised if she is charged with GBH>
Kieran - the paper says she was arrested for "GBH without intent" - commonly known as S20 Assault. If she had done as you suggest, it would be S18 Assault - GBH with intent I would have thoughtWant to know the Spen666 behind the posts?

No evidence as yet.
Some "driver" left a massive rant on the webpage about this - personally I think he/she was trying to stir up trouble as they'd accused cyclists of slagging off drivers (which hadnt happened).0
