Best Commuting Bike?

Hi All,
I'm about to change my old Falcon Nomad for a shiny new bike, which I will use for my daily 10 mile round trip to work, mainly on roads/cycles paths but a short stretch on a flat path through some woodland. I would prefer something more suited to faster road cycling than off road as my pleasure cycling is usually on local rural roads or relatively smooth off road tracks - does anyone have any recommendations on a good machine for these purposes? My budget is about £300-400. Any advice or ideas gratefully received......

A cyclo-cross bike might suit though they tend to be a wee bit more than your budget?
