Why are spd type pedals called clipless when you do clip in to them?

because they do not use a toe clip and strap. but still provide a clipped in feel.

    I always wondered that actually.
  • Must admit I always wondered that myself but thought it would make me look silly if I asked

"Strapless pedals" would be a better description.
You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.

    Except flats are also strapless.

And you used to be able to get a toe clip that didn't use a strap.

And there's also dresses and bras which come strapless!

Best left as it is in my opinion.

there are no silly questions. i learnt a long time ago to ask questions about things i didn't understand.

the consequences of not asking the questions will make you look a lot sillier.

I reckon they should be called "clip-ins" or "click-ins" or "step-ins" or, oh you know , I just don't care.

Just call em SPDs like everyone else (even if they are made by Time, Crank Bros etc.).
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result
