With the popularity of PMR radios is there a channel us mountain bikers use incase of emergency. Just thought it might be a good idea if we had a dedicated channel to use at trail centers etc incase of emergencies. Or is it a silly idea.

Do *that* many people use them? Best channel is 999 on a mobile phone.

Not when you don't have any signal !!
  • The road racing club I used to ride with a few years back was big on these, mainly because it made some guys feel like pros with the whole ear-piece thing! They were useful on some of our longer early season rides and meant we had fewer re-group stops. But this was in the US where they took-off a while ago.

I don't think I would rely on one for an emergency but I think they would be a good idea when out with a group on trails.

999 or 112 will work on pretty much any phone any where in the UK (its been designed that way Im lead to believe) as that number will use any available network source.

You'll have more chance reaching someone that way than via a radio.

There are quite a few places not covered by any of the operators. Most of them tend to be the worst place to not have signal...
