I want to upgarde my Giant XTC composite with some faster lighter wheels. I am looking at hope hoops either pro 2 or pro 3 hubs on dt swiss 4.2 rims. I do most of my riding on cross country trails like cannock chase but I also plan to do the coast to coast mountain bike ride which will involve a bit more downhill,What do you guys think. Will these wheels/ rims / hubs be a good buy? Will they cope with the coast to coast ?

Have the Hope Pro 3's on my Stumpjumper HT, have taken eight months of abuse, and aare still as good as the day I fitted them. I have done trips to Afan with them (on 1.95 Cinders), and about 1000 miles general XC offraod. I am really pleased with them, and can recommend to anyone. Best price I found was Dave Hinde Racing at £279.

There will be a load of posts now, about go to Merlin, XT hubs, different rims blah, blah, but I bought what I wanted and am glad I did, the hubs also look mega smart and the wheels are very light as well as being very strong.

    Go for it

Firstly avoid david hinde like the plague...

The hope hoops are very nice, if you want something that'll take a bit more abuse than them look at the merlin wheelsets, they come tensioned really tight and even. 719 on proII would fit the bill nicely.
  • I agree with above point - Dave HInde is a total cowboy and many forumites have had bad experiences with him... steer well clear...

Also, Mavic 719s on Pro II is an awesome combo, slightly more robust than the DT4.2ds but light enough for fast rolling XC... have a set on one of my rigs - a good wheelset - from merlin of course ;)
  • Cheers for the advice guys. Wiggle have some good prices on the hope hoops so I might be buying from there

Hope's rear Pro2 has a really loud clicking noise.

    Mine's driving me nuts!

I freewheel a lot less now.

    They seem good otherwise though.

Personally, I really like the loud click on the freewheel, great for unnerving your mates on nadgery singletrack, when you're on their wheel, and they're thinking 'that b4st4rd's freewheeling again' , also good on tight bridleways for people to hear you coming.

On a different note, have only used Dave Hinde once (for the wheels) which were delivered in two days, no fuss, can only speak as I find on that one :)

I have Hope Hoops with 5.1D's on Pro 2's, got them from Dave Hinde for #210 at the start of the year, for the price listed / charged by all other shops I got the wheels, XT cassette, a KMC X9.93 chain and two inner tubes!!

If you can pick them up from there then go for it, or ensure he has them in stock, best man to speak to a a guy called Jim

    Nadgery

That's a great word, that is!

Couldn't find a definition for it online.

    Mind if I use it?
