Okay guys be gentle with me

I want to travel from West London into the City avoiding road like the A40 and the Uxbridge Road. The Grand Union canal is not an option as I'm told it gets too busy with walkers etc. I could get the Chilten Railway into Marylebone and cycle from there but they don't let bikes on during peak hours.

Any suggestions?

Have no idea, mate, as I don't live out that way. But welcome anyway! :D

    "It stays down, Daddy."
    "Exactly."

    Hey Harry,

Where exactly are you coming in from?

Also, do you shave your legs? (that piece of information is the price you pay for the help)
Fixed gear for wet weather / hairy roadie for posing in the sun.

    What would Thora Hurd do?

Depending on where exactly you are starting I don't think you have many options other than the a40 or uxbridge rd. I'd avoid the a40. You can then come round shepherds bush green across towards bayswater road. Cut through hyde park to hyde park corner. Then constitution hill, the mall, T square and down to the embankment before heading east into the city. Its not that bad as long as you ride defensively and look ahead to anticipate problems.

    Good luck.

Coming from Ruislip, trying to get to London Bridge.

As for my legs wifey is not keen on the shaving idea plus the kids already hate it if I meet them in the street with me fully lycrad up!

Just thought I'd bring this back to the top in the hope that someone might know a decent route

Hi Harry welcome, here you go http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?id=2142 my wife used to do a similar route but following the canal to Camden either way that's a long commute.
Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.
Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.

  • One of the SCRs will be along in a minute to advise you to take a route in which will correspond to them at their fastest - they love fresh blood......
  • If you're not sold on the suggestions so far, just try part of the route one day, and plan a route that allows you to catch a bus or tube if/when it gets too much for you towards the end.

Alternatively, get yourself a cheap old bike and leave it on the bike stands on the platform at Marylebone. Use one bike to get to Ruislip, and one at the other end. I did similar for years, and loved it.

its not really a matter of it getting too much, I've done the route already and regularly cycle a lot further. It's just that the ride along the A40 is soooo boring, noisey and ugly.

Leaving a bike at Marylebone is a possibility but I'm told it's difficult to get a space plus I really wanted to get the train part of the way in the mornings (when I generally knackered/late/hungover) and then to cycle all the way home in the evenings.

I don't get much time for cycling and I'm pissed off with the tube so biking it seems to obvious option but logistically its proving to be a challenge.

I'll cycle the route on Sunday and see if I can find any other options but if anyone has any other ideas I'd be a pal for ever (us roadies are friendly like that)

Yesssssssssssssssss come join usssssss (well, me) on the uxbridge road... join ussssssssss

Actually, in all seriousness that's the way I travel in every day from Ealing, and it's not that bad.

Hey LiT, Don_Don would be jealous of such offers

I'll try the Uxbridge Road but that's not much more interesting than the A40. What's a SCR by the way?
  • I understand what you are asking now. :)

I don't have much experience of cycling in that area, but I did commute from South Ruislip to Greenford for a few weeks on the West End Rd. Which was fine, and makes me think that there must be a way to avoid the Uxbridge Rd.

As for what an SCR is, how long have you got? It involves reading about 300 pages of the Silly Commuting Racing thread. There is no better place to learn just what a bunch of 'characters' this forum attracts.

Good luck on both fronts.
