Can anyone recommned a lightweight rucksack good for carrying a laptop. I've been using a Wenger Swissgear for the past couple of years but the strap's finally given out and I never much liked it anway beacuse i) it was too heavy and ii) it was not very stable. I'm looking for something light, with a separate pocket for a laptop that keeps it secure and undamaged, preferably with chest and waist straps - also not too lairy as I need to take it into meetings etc.

  • I use a bog standard rucksack from Millets with my laptop inside in one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-15-4-Inc ... 956&sr=8-2

I've been carrying it around like that for about 6 months now, with plenty of other junk in the rucksack as well, and it's been fine.

I take mine to work in an Alpkit Gourdon. They do them in loads of sizes and colours, they even do a stealth version. It's basically a rolltop waterproof bag with straps. The advantage I find is that is very thin on the back so does not obstruct your view and is dirt cheap. In my 30 litre i get a spare jacket, clean shirt, change of underwear, spare socks, laptop and charger, with loads of room to spare.

Give one a try at the prices they sell them for you can afford to trash it.

  • One thing I would recommend is also getting one of those neoprene type material 'sleeves' for your laptop.

I dropped my rucksack one day before I got one of these, and it cracked the screen (fortunately company was very understanding about replacing it)
  • I know a lot of people hate them, and they are VERY expensive - but there is nothing I've ever come across as good as the Rapha laptop rucksack. Utter brilliance.

eBags.co.uk have the hard-shell Boblbee Megalopolis Sport at less than half price in a discontinued colour (green). Its still 55 notes (vs 115 normally!) but it'll take a lot of abuse.

NB: the Sport is the basic model so the 'laptop holder' is literally the 2 straps to secure the laptop in place. If you're carrying other stuff inside the bag that could damage the laptop, you'd probably still want to buy a sleeve as well.

On the plus side, its also an EU certified back-protector...

I don't think anyone hates Rapha. Is envious of people who can afford to buy Rapha (or in my case, who won Rapha in a bikeradar competition :D ) perhaps, but it's excellent stuff, and I'd love more if I could afford it.
