Bung two Tesco lights on your helmet ? Better spread and give you a good workout of your neck muscles !
Two "D" cell 4W CREE LED torches attached with duct-tape should do the job nicely for £40! (£18 each for the torches, £3.99 for duct tape)

Dazza - ended up getting this charger:

    and these batteries:

    http://www.batterylogic.co.uk/hybrio-aa ... attery.asp

The charger does absolutely everything including bringing old batteries "back to life" - almost makes charging fun!

The Hybrios (2100mAh) may actually be more suited to our digi camera (infrequent use) but I'll try them in the light too - got 2850mAh Ansmanns (supposedly the best you can buy) which might well be the best for the new light.

Suddenly, I've become a battery bore as well as car, bike, surf, allsorts bore!!

Nice choice of charger, quite cheap too.

As for the batteries you will see the range tops out at 2700mah at best, sanyo if they did above 2700mah they would probably have matched if not better, i have no idea if they sell higher than 2700 though.

The hybrio batteries are very good choice, best to throw them in the charger first despite their saying fully charged they will probably have lost some from being stored.
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

Andy - yep. They come pre-charged and lose very little charge over time. High mAh batteries lose charge quickly - however they are better for high drain stuff if use very frequently. Hybrids are best for stuff you don't use all the time.
  • The Airbike light came and I ended up going for a Fenix TK11 for the helmet.

    Cost - quite a lot.

    Airbike - £145 all in
Fenix TK11 - £85 all in (torch, two rechargebles, charger, rubber lockblock helmet mount)

Total £230 spent v's £250 that I was going to spend on the Ay Up mountain bike set.

I thought I'd go for the airbike plus Fenix as on paper they should be much brighter.

A friend went for the Ay Ups so I can compare the two directly.

The Airbike is a bit of a disappointment tbh. It's pretty bright, but compared the the wide angle version of the Ay Up which is puportedly 50% less powerful it looks only a bit more powerful. It weighs a fair bit more, the bracket as others have complained is a bit naff, the switch to get to the 'high' mode is a pain (turn it on and off 4 times to get it to go on high).
    It's not terrible though.

The Fenix is pretty good as a torch. It does however weigh loads more than the Ay Up plus the Ay Up battery pack on your head. The throw and spread is about the same as the narrow Ay Up. It sits pretty high on your helmet and I did at one point get it caught in an over hanging branch wich yanked my head back pretty hard. Had I been going more than 10mph it could have been much worse.

All in all the two combined are a pretty good set, however for £20 more the Ay Up set is a lot better. They are tiny, look more robust, knock out about the same amount of light and weigh less.

If anyone wants to buy the set off me - I've paid £230. Used once so they're mint. Would accept £180? They're easily worth that, I just guessed they would be Ay Up killers.

Got one of those tesco lights for a tenner yesterday and put it on helmet and boy its

    good :D

It goes great with my electron ehp325 set up, plenty of lite to see by and keeps me

going for a good 2-3 hours.

Considering getting another and maybe sticking that on helmet asweel for back-up 8)

Interesting what you say about the Airbike, especially as the new one is £165 compared to the £149 for the AYUP single. I have had the AYUP's for about a year now and I wouldn't change them for anything, they're light, bright and totally bombproof.

Out for a ride last night - stopped for a breather and to watch a rabbit playing in the fields in the distance - lit up by my torch on turbo.

Next thing i hear is a call from a bird of prey - and the rabbit disappeared. Er....

I cut bit of old innertube and put torch into that for bit of cushioning and wet weather

protection then used some velcro straps I had lying about to secure torch to helmet.

    Works great :D

No photo sorry. My helmet has a central vent and the torch sits in that. two velcro straps

secure it in place, passing around the vents either side of the central one.

good job with the trails i seem to ride. :)
