Best Hardtail for under £1k ?

Hi,
Any thoughts on the best hardtail with a maximum budget of £1k - ideally less?
I'll be mostly using it for cross country, but also want to be able to take it on trails.
I've seen a 2008 Marin Nail Trail for £720 which looks good.
Also considered the Trek 6500 Disc for £599
Thanks for your help

Make your mind up on how much you want to spend.
A Merlin Malt or Rock Lobster for just under a grand would be a significantly better bike than one costing 720 notes.
That Merida doesnt look up to much. That chainset guard would fall off after the first couple of rides. Streako

Thanks for the replies.
Have just had a look at the Merlin site - good specs
The Marin Nail Trail 09 is £899 so £720 for last years seems good
Cheers

Like streako says, you need to decide on your budget, as the amount of choice you have UP TO a grand is amazing. Here's a few I would consider in the same situation.
Boardman Pro £999 http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_241863_langId_-1_categoryId_165499#dtab

Revolution Triad 08 £799 http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/ebwPNLqrymode.a4p?f%5FProductID=9211&f%5FFullProductVersion=1&f%5FSupersetQRY=C106&f%5FSortOrderID=1&f%5Fbct=c003155c002909
Commenca Combi Deluxe £539 http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/?fn=product&productId=1108&categoryId=129
Focus Killer Bee 08 £799 http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/Focus_Killer_Bee_Disc_2008/5360032357/Boardman Road Comp '08

I have a focus killer bee 08 and it is amazing! And for the knock down price of 720 quid on wiggle you really would get a bargain there 8)0

Where is it that price at?0 -
Form CRC or www.chainreactioncycles.com , but don't worry, if you buy from some lbs that sells Cube bikes, it will still be under 1k or £900.0

I can second Jacktheoc's recommendation of Pauls Cycles having used them myself. They often have good prices for end of year stock (bear in mind what time of year it is, 2008 is now "last year").
And the Zaskar is brilliant.
Or, even better...... http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/products.p ... Suspension
600 squid off, if it's your frame size.

Haro Flightline expert !!!!!! £550 ,altho the 09 models are going to cost more,
Mountain bike action magazine reviewed this bike and said "its probably the most fun mountain bike you will ever ride"
If you look at the specs you will see your getting a lot of bike for the money , you are paying for the bike not the name!!
Trust me , its great0 -
Just an idea but with a grand you also have the option of creating a bike yourself, collecting the frame and parts etc then getting someone to assemble it for you. Me and my pal (GT Destroyer on here) started this towards the end of last year, which culminated in Stif building our bikes in feb this year. Noted we did spend over a grand in the end (prob more like £1250). The bikes we created are very well specced for that, with some of the best parts in most departments, so with a grand you could definately do a similar thing, especially with the end of year deals and t'old credit crunch!
Some might see it as hassle, where as we just loved doing it (it was like xmas morning everything time a delivery card was left on the kitchen door mat - which part has arrived now?!?!), and obviously takes a bit of time. The result for me was without doubt the best bike I've ever ridden, and thus well worth it. We used this place for advice about those parts that need more thought put into them (compatibility etc) and have finished up with unique bikes with their own personality. I love my rig! it, or should I say she, has even got a name for crying out loud!
If you prefer to buy a bike off the shelf it might be important to consider what type of riding you do? More aggressive riding might want to see a bit more travel up front than some of the recommendations as well as a slacker head angle. GTs are great (more xc usually), orange are very good, and on-one are supposed to be brilliant, not to mention the mighty Marin (guess who my frame is made by?!)
Other thing is always have a test ride when you check bikes out - these guys on here have always said that and I couldn't agree more.
Let us know how you are getting on with your decision.

I've got a Specialized P - All Mountain 08 and i can't complain, it's got a brillianant spec for an £800 all mountain bike, see for yourself.....
