hi all
i have had my GT aggressor XCR 08 for 4 months, has a truvativ firex chainset, xt rear mech, deore cassette and hg73 chain. using the park tool chain checker the chain has stretched to the .75 mark. recommended chain replacement is 1000 miles i've only done 500 miles max of casual riding. i've had a few decent mtb this is the first 1 where i have had to change my chain so soon . i'm thinking its the chainset i've only used shimano in the past, what do you think ?

Could be a large number of factors, for example it has been a very wet summer which never helps longevity.
You could always get a SRAM chain and see how that holds up.Scott Ransom 10

Main thing is to get the chain changed now before you wear out chainrings and cassette.
SRAM PC971 or 991 would be my reccomendation.Tredz seems to be the cheapest at the moment for SRAM chains.2006 Giant XTC
2010 Giant Defy Advanced
2016 Boardman Pro 29er
2016 Pinnacle Lithium 4
2017 Canondale Supersix Evo0 -
I think the lifetimes they quote are for a perfect condition where the chain never encounters junk and is always perfectly lubed.
On road you can probably get close with a lot of maintenance but off-road you have no chance IMO.
Change it and be happy you caught it when you did, 4 months is not a bad lifetime in my experience.Giant TCR advanced 2 (Summer/race)
Merlin single malt fixie (Commuter/winter/training)
Trek superfly 7 (Summer XC)
Giant Yukon singlespeed conversion (winter MTB/Ice/snow)

another thing, when i 1st got the bike the chainset, chain, cassette did nt feel smooth i could feel the friction, new bikes do this i know but it still does it0 -
They often settle down after a few rides (and the gears readjusted)0
