All the below has come from Wiggle unless stated otherwise.

1 Lights? Cateye cheap front x 2, Cateye cheap rear x 1, Blackburn Mars 3 x 1, all very good.

2 Pump? Wrench Force push/pull mini-pump with pressure gauge, LBS. Annoyingly hard to use in pull mode.

3 Multi tool & Tyre levers? I forget but the multi-tool was about £19 and a Wiggle special offer. Works fine.

4 Lock? Abus D-lock, 9 on that strength scale, Evans. Decent compromise between weight and strength, hasn't been cut yet!

5 Helmet? Trek £40 job, LBS. Very pleased with it.

6 Jacket? Descente dayglo yellow windproof jacket. Delighted with it, and it was half price.

7 Shorts/Trousers? DHB shorts, DHB Merston bib tights. Excellent.

8 Waterproof clothing? Marmot waterproof shell jacket from the outdoors shop at the north end of Wardour Street. Way too sweaty, hardly ever wear it except in torrential rain and cold.

9 Gloves? Specialized BG fingerless gloves (excellent); Briko lightweight autumn full finger gloves (comfy but no grips on fingertips, so slippy), Endura winter MTB gloves (have only worn once - seem very stiff but may loosen up)

10 Shoes? Specialized BG MTB shoes - brilliantly comfortable shoes, though the opposite of waterproof.

11 Pedals? Crank Bros Egg beaters, Stainless Steel on Focus, Cro-Mo on Trek. Love 'em - light, sexy and super easy to use with 4 entry points.

    Hi all,

Can you tell me what of the following equipment you have, What you think off it, And where you got it(ie online, halfords....)

    1 Lights?
Blackburn Mars 3.0 rear light - very impressed.
Mars front light - ok for being seen, not too good for seeing with though.
several "keyring" type rear lights on my pannier or helmet as a spares etc - good value for money.

    2 Pump?
Blackburn and a Specialised ....cant recall what type though :?

3 Multi tool & Tyre levers?
alien multi tool (alien2?) and a hope mini 9. Both brilliant.

    4 Lock?
Kryptoflex cable in the garage to a ground anchor - seems ok.
Oxford heavyduty loop for frame to post and and krptonite cable lock for wheelst to frame when out and about. Well, the bikes never been stolen. :D

    5 Helmet?
Met - I think its the predecesor of the Veleno, but I may be wrong on that. About £70 and 6 years old. Yes its good...but looks a bit wide (mushroom head!)

    6 Jacket?
Gill - don't make it anymore, comming up 3 years old with 5 days/week use and its brilliant.

    7 Shorts/Trousers?
Humvee - very good (£40) (without the liners) and some Kona baggies(£40), just as good as the hummvee but not as baggy. Just got some ronhill stretch pants (£20)and there ok for the cold mornings.

    8 Waterproof clothing?
Just the gill jacket and some Endura waterproof overtrousers for severe rain storms.

    9 Gloves?
Hmmm. about 15 pairs so I can't really recall them all. Most are MTB gloves, lot of 661 and Kona ones.

    10 Shoes?
Trainers with stiff soles (yes, really :D )

    11 Pedals?
Yes, I have some of those too. I only spend cash on the MTB ones though, road bikes have bog standard pedals on for me at the moment.

    All bought from......
    80% Chainreactioncycles.com
    10% Edinburghcyclecoop
    10% Evans/other
    Jas
it looks a bit steep to me.....

1 Lights? Hope HID (LED backup), Dinotte rear (LED backup)

2 Pump? Topeak something - small and silver

3 Multi tool & Tyre levers? Anything will do, but it has to have range of allen keys, crosshead and flat head screwdriers and a chain tool (I carry one if not) and Parktool levers - the black nylon ones bend. Yes - wihin reason these items are generic.

4 Lock? Abus and Abus (I'm obsessive)

    5 Helmet? Spec. Decibel.

6 Jacket? Rarely - usu. base layer(s) and an impossibly oily yellow gilet.

7 Shorts/Trousers? I usually wear shorts or trousers

    10 Shoes? Sidi

    11 Pedals? speedplay X series

    and don't forget:

12 - bag: pannier, backpack, courier, saddle? (saddle for tools, etc, + courier for me, possibly about get get a seatpost rack - the descent into middle age begins)
    13 - tube AND patches
14 - eyewear? (Always - particularly in winter)
15 - water bottle - I am a camel so mine is covered in moss, but they are a good idea in theory.
16 cycle computer - of no practical use really but its compulsory to have at least one gadget.

Bought from Wiggle + Edinburgh Bicycle (my local) + misc online and Halfords (for things like the tools, pump, tubes and LEDs they can be the cheapest).

  • 1 Lights? Cateye EL520 (front) and Cateye TL610 (rear) from Condor. Cateye EL120/LD170 set in my seat pack as spares - from LBS. Plus various odds and ends as spares, childrens toys (keeps him entertained while sorting out dirty nappies)

2 Pump? Just ordered a Park Tools track pump from Chain Reaction (http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtop ... 8&start=15)

3 Multi tool & Tyre levers? Topeak 8 multi-tool. Tyre levers part of Innovations CO2 set. All from LBS.

4 Lock? Various - wife's old D-lock for undergound car park at work, Oxford D-lock from when I had a motorbike for use at home, Abus (15 rating, I think) D-lock from Condor to carry around, plus and old ski lock which I (possibly naively) think stops my front wheel being nicked.

5 Helmet? A blue MET helmet - not sure it suits me but not to the extent I'm prepared to buy a new one.

6 Jacket? A couple - using an orange Gore gilet at the moment but use an old running jacket (with sleeves) when it gets colder from Evans. A jacket (Altura?) due any day now with my C+ sub.

11 Pedals? Shimano A520 from Condor - I fancy some Crank Brothers pedals but maybe next month :)
Never be tempted to race against a Barclays Cycle Hire bike. If you do, there are only two outcomes. Of these, by far the better is that you now have the scalp of a Boris Bike.
  • 1 Lights? Cateye battery-eating halogen something-or-other. Various unbranded rear red LED lights.

2 Pump? Topeak Mini-pump, SKS Renkompressor track pump (both excellent). Wiggle

3 Multi tool & Tyre levers? Generic, part of a puncture repair kit. Cheap & work fine.

4 Lock? Specialized Hardlock D-lock. Never quite forgiven it after it once refused to let me have my bike back for half an hour one freezing, wet night in Southampton. Purchased somewhere near Lingfield.

5 Helmet? Privously Met & Bell models. Now a Briko Arrow, Wiggle.

6 Jacket? Altura fluorescent yellow jacket, purchased in C&N cycles. Altura soft-shell jacket, purchased in Evans. Both very nice although it's rarely cold enough to wear the soft-shell.

7 Shorts/Trousers? Craghoppers Kiwis. £17/pair on the net.

    8 Waterproof clothing? See jackets...

9 Gloves? Various fingerless cycling gloves. Aldi neoprene cycling gloves. For colder weather I also have a variety of fleece, lined, waterproof or windproof gloves to wear depending on the conditions. None of these are cycling specific and all were originally bought for other purposes.

    10 Shoes? Not cycling specific.

    11 Pedals? Yes, flats.

    12. Rack and Panniers: Blackburn rack and an Altura Franken-pannier, stitched together from the remains of a pannier set I wrecked.

  • 1 Lights?

Ay-Ups (bought direct) on the bars; Fenix L2D Q5 (from fenixtorch.co.uk) on the helmet for off-road commute.

    2 Pump?

Spesh track pump at home, some cheap thing on the bike. Both LBS bought.

3 Multi tool & Tyre levers?

Can't remember the multitool type (though LBS bought); Park Tools tyre levers from CRC.

    4 Lock?

Basic padlock & chain x2 that I bought from a DIY store forever ago. The bike is parked in a secure location, so they are sufficient.

    5 Helmet?

    Spesh Air8 from LBS.

    6 Jacket?

Ground Effect Two Timer (bought direct) plus a waterproof jacket that is not breathable enough and too big but doesn't get used enough to warrant replacement (bought from LBS).

    7 Shorts/Trousers?

Ground Effect Sputniks are my favourite shorts; Ron Hill Tracksters go on over the top when it gets frosty...

    8 Waterproof clothing?

    See 'jacket' above.

    9 Gloves?

How come you don't like Castelli?

    Ha ha!

J - I was looking at the speedplay pedals, but wasn't sure if they were a bit too 'different' to be that well recommended. I thought they may be good for beginners with the double sides - are they easy to clip out of?
    Commuting: Giant Bowery 08
    Winter Hack: Triandrun Vento 3
    Madone
