Need a new bike!

Hi to all! I'm new to the forum, but not new to bikes (all types) and have been road riding for 5+ years. I would like some advice. As I said I'm a roadie at heart, but recently was lucky enough to have a demo ride (nice off road) on a Trek Fuel EX 9.9 which was awesome. Since then I've been going out on my very old MTB (was my commuter bike for 5 years). Anyway, the forks and headset are shot so I'm going for a new bike.

I would really like to get a Fuel EX7, but I'm thinking it might be overkill. I have been riding round the local bridleways and woods which are quite rocky, so a full sus would be nice, but I know I could cope on a Hardtail around where I live.

I know there are guys out there who ride both or who have ridden both and would like some feedback. Half of me thinks that if I can afford the FS then why not, the other half says that if I've had fun and coped on what is basically a rigid (that's how bad the forks are!) then I should just get a good hardtail?

All opinions welcome, thanks in advance.

EDIT: If this should be in the buying advice section could a moderator please move it. Thanks,
