Campagnolo Ultrashift compatibility

I assume that the new and old *10 speed* components are all interchangeable, as the cassette spacing, chain width etc. are unchanged.
If it's any help, I'm using the new 2009 10 speed Centaur ergos with a 2007/2008 (compact) chainset and front shifter and it works perfectly - I would have been very surprised if it didn't. I'd also be extremely surprised if they made the new shifters unable to function with a triple chainset.0 -
P.S. Just checking the front shift on the 2009 Centaur, it has at least 3 click positions (actually I think there are 4 but I have the limiters set so that one isn't really engaging).
Also, you can release the "clicks" one by one using the button, unlike with the old Centaur, so I imagine that this would allow you to get the chain on the middle ring. Did the old Centaur not work with a triple?0 -
Ha, well, I just looked at the instruction booklet...
"The new Ergopower Ultra-Shift controls are not compatible with QS front derailleurs"....
I beg to differ, it works great for me!
But it also mentions use with a triple crankset, so I guess that it definitely OK.0 -
Thanks Neeb - good news on the triple set up.
I'm thinking of it in terms of a conversion job - flat bar hybrid to drop bar, which came with shimano 8 speed triple set up, including shimano alivio front derailleur. I like the look of the new campag lever design, and the fact it apparently works with shimano 8 speed makes it v tempting.0 -
I don't know about 8sp Shimano compatibility (on the rear you mean?), but if it works with the old 10sp campagnolo shifters I don't see why it shouldn't with the new ones, as they are presumably pulling the same amount of cable.0

Should be fine with a triple imo, there are plenty of clicks at the front! Don't know how they can say it's not compatible with QS!
Will be fine with 8 speed at the rear as it's the same spacing as 2008 (which I have running with 8 speed Shimano on my tourer.)0 -
Hi there, i would like to know of anyone's experiences of using new 2009 centaur ergopower levers with older groupsets.
I have a bike with 2008 Mirage 10 speed.
I have bought 2009 10 speed centaur levers, but they will not index with the rear mech. Any thoughs as to why?
The front QS mech works really well. Even though it says it is not compatible in the instructions.0 -
New Centaur Ergos will work any 10 speed rear mech - mine are used with a 2006 rear.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

Got it working.
The cable was not being fully released by the lever when up shifting. It was releaseing a little bit, but not fully.
I had to file the small hole that it runs through after the cable leaves the nylon liner in the lever. The plastic moulding of the right lever is quite shoddy, and ragged at the edges. The hole that the cable goes through was not quite matching the outer cable housing hole, so there was too much friction. Using a small rats tail file i have opened up the hole slightly and tidied up the edges of the shifter a lot. This has reduced the drag on the bale a lot.
Also the ultra-low-friction outer cable had too much friction for my liking. I have replaced it with Shimano SP41 pre-greased housing and the reduction in friction is very noticable
All in all, the shifting is now working perfectly.
Just a shame that i had to do this on a £150 ergolever. The finishing of the internals looks very good, but the plastic moulding of the lever is not very tidy.0
