Newbie wheel question

Hi
I am looking for some advice as a newbie to road biking.
After spending more time cleaning than riding my mountain bike due to the weather I am looking at a road bike for over the winter.
I have an old road bike, about 20 years old, which I want to clean up and use.
The wheels are 27" with 5 gears and are a bit rusty around the spoke nipples and rim, I am worried that they will have fatigued and might collapse under me.
I can find some new cheapish wheels but they are 700 and 8/9 speed, I wouldnt think the 15mm increase in dia would be a problem but want to know if there is a difference in width that fits in the frame between the 5 speed and 8 /9 speed wheels.
Any help would be appreciated thanks

Modern spacing is a bit wider. Have you asked at a local bike shop, if you have a good old fashoned shop they may be able to help. A small shop near us sells wheels he builds himself for about £30 each, nothing fancy but perfectly servicable. This may be an option to consider as changing to modern wheels would need a new wider cassette and the derailleur may not be compatible.0
