Other than £90, whats the difference between these rear mechs, and which one would you get?

it depends on what shifter you have on the bar. as you will need a shifter that works with the mech.

not 100% true, you can use sram attack or rocket shifters with xtr.

Persoanlly XTR, but that's because I'm a Shimano fan and I am used to Shimano shifters (and don't have enough money to go buying loads of different bike bits just to try them out, although that doesn't always stop me  ).

What have you got now shifterwise, and do you like the shifting feel.
Why are you looking to buy? Have you already got top groupset shifters? In my experience you're better uprgrading shifters before the mech. The shifters have more impact on the feel of shifting than the mech. E.g. I found XT shifters on an XT mech much better than LX shifters on an XTR mech (LX shifters have since gone to Ebay to finance new XT shifters).
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result
  • Both are top quality bits of kit. XTR is cheaper and lighter in action, X0 arguably more pimp and more accurate when it gets muddy.

Like stumpyjon says it's more about the shifter, I prefer the feel of Rapidfire over SRAM triggers but again it's personal choice. When it comes down to it you can't go wrong with either choice. Shimano's cheaper though

i have an x0a rear mech and although is a nic looking thing, i cnt feel any differenc betwen that and the x9 i have on the stumpy, and the x9 is a buck load cheaper!!
  • Thanks for the info guys. I'm currently running an x7 rear mech with x5 shifters (came as standard on the bike), but I am looking to upgrade at some stage. I'm thinking I might save that little bit more dosh for the X0 stuff :?
  • I'd go for the SRAM myself- overall they seem to work better when it's muddy- which is at least 75% of the year in the UK! Although, if you really look after your drivetrain, then Shimano seems better value- maybe with full length cable outers the benefits of the 1:1 ratio would be less. XT for £30 @ Wiggle.
I wouldn't by XO solely due to the cost- X9 will be my next upgrade, although at nearly the cost of XTR, it's a tough choice.
If I was in your position I'd keep the X7 until it broke. I'm currently running a 2nd hand SRAM SX5- shifts perfectly, if not quite as quick and slick as a Shimano setup might.
