Located the rattling sound, now what...

For a few days my RockHopper has developed a rattling sound from the rear somewhere, and I could not locate it. I checked every available screw, bolt etc....they were all tight and in order.
However, today I noticed that my rear cassette was loose on some of the rings. It is a 9 speed cassette, and when the chain is on gears 7-9, the remaining gears (1-6) can actually rattle around loose. They move approx 5mm in either direction (forward/backward).
They dont rattle when the chain is on them, as obviously the chain is holding them securely, but I tend to ride in gears 8/9 anyway, so this rattling sound is very obvious, on anything other than a perfectly smooth road!
Not being all the mechanically minded (esp for bikes!) I am open for advice/suggestions, if anyone could help? I hope my description is legible!
Thanks
