having finally got myself a carbon fibre 'proper' bike this summer i'd like to keep it nice. Therefore rather than sell my old (15 years or so) Peugeot racer for £20 on ebay I'll bang some mudguards on it and use it in the bad weather. But how do I know whether the frame is suitable or not ? anyone got any advice ?

Depends what bike it is m8?.
I have a Pinarello FP1 that I use for everything, including commuting in all weathers.
I fitted one of these to help keep the crud and wet off the rear :-

Fits to the seat stay so even if you have very little clearance between the wheels/tyres and rear stays, it will work fine.
Canny be bad for £12. 8)
As far as front guards go though, not sure.Ethernet (noun): Something used to catch the etherbunny.

If you have mudguard eyes on or near the dropouts and have at least 1/2" clearance between the tyre and the fork and seat stay bridges you will be fine. The chainstay bridge may be threaded but you can secure the guard here with a clip (often supplied with the guards) or a zip tie.0
