Tights inside or tights outside?

Stupid question I know, but I always put my padded shorts on first and then the tights on top.

However, I saw a photo of a guy with his the other way 'round. Have I inadvertently committed a faux pax?

Should I in fact be wearing the tights inside the shorts or doesn't it matter a stuff?

Why two layers? Don't you just have padded tights and forget about shorts altogether when it's cold?

I raced this weekend and cycled to the venue. On the way there I had shorts inside, tights outside. On arrival, because my shorts were team colours, and the tights were plain I switched them. 5 minutes into the race I realised my mistake as the central seam of the tights was sawing me in half.

I had to wait until we'd finished to switch it back. If your tights have a seam down the middle put your padding in first!

  • Depends on if you are Superman or not!

I put tights over shorts because I'm just a regular guy, and because it's more cost effective to just buy shorts with the best quality padding and then unpadded tights, rather than having 2 sets of padded clothing. I also use leg warmers with the same shorts for added versatility. But I do have some padded 3/4 bibs.

    Agreed,

It's got to be proper chilly to get your tights on and frigid to cycle in your waterproof...

There's nothing worse than pulling up at the lights looking like a yellow crisp packet when a dude pulls up in shorts and a short sleeved jersey - oh the shame.

Ah, but in the mornings, when it's right proper chilly Arctic style, tights are de riguer. Because otherwise the cold will give you tendonitis in your knees.

I always smile to myself in a Blofeld-kind of way when I see some poor sap with bare knees on a cold morning.

Are you sure he wasn't wearing leg warmers which fit under the leg of your shorts and might look like tights under shorts.

You can then wear the tights to the disco without looking like you are wearing a nappy.

    Yeah baby.

Just so you know - I wouldn't recommend cycling any distance with non-cycling tights under cycling shorts.

Some bloke once told me that this causes chafing.
  • if I can be the other sensible one:
    1) padding always goes next to the skin (otherwise what's the point?)
    2) I always wear shorts under non-padded tights. It's far easier to wash a pair of shorts that tights.
    3) Down here on the south coast it's far too warm for bib-shorts + bib-tights, so I wear simple "waist" shorts with bib-tights.
    4) Otherwise it's bib-shorts with knee-warmers everytime.

For all the tight wearers out there, what do people recommend as a decent value for money set?

Not too bothered about with padding/without as can always combo them if required with the bib shorts.

dhb merstons are pretty good vfm. Commuted all last winter using them with no problems. Too warm for them just now, though, down sarf

I can also recommend the Lusso Repel Max. I have the bib version, but they're available without if you prefer. Bear in mind that they're pretty stretchy so you might want to try before you buy (I'm 1.83m tall, and the Small is a perfect fit for me).

+1 for DHBs. Cheap and good. Last winter I was wearing my 3/4 shorts to keep the knees protected, then when the frost arrived it was tights under the 3/4s. Worked for me :)

May be getting rather smelly after a week :D a good wash required.

If I wear tights (compression) when cycling I wear em over the knicks as the knicks are designed for cycling and reduce chafing. IF its cold I where full length warm knicks

I've had a pair of these for nigh on 15 years and they're still going strong, which I reckon makes them very good value for money.

Newcastle seems to be a climate anomaly. I mean, its cold and windy in Edinbrugh, but no matter how cold and windy it is in Edinbugh, it always appears to be colder in Newcastle. Why is that? Is it something to do with the Fog of the Tyne?

Dude - you're asking a guy how his tights smell. This is not good. :?

Oddly enough, since the late 80's we've had electricity and running water out here in the west country. I own and use a washing machine!

Also, the motor car is now nearly so popular that the locals have stopped pointing and staring when they see one.

  • I have just switched to thesedhb earnley 3/4 bib shorts from shorts to protect my knees from the cold £25ish.

It's already a bit parky first thing most mornings in saddleworth and I plan to get a thermal set for when it gets proper chilly.
