.... looks suspiciously like my old and crappy "MTB" but I have converted it to singlespeed.

The gears don't work very well so I don't change them.

Voila - no investment needed.

Have I missed the point?

    My rear shift cable snapped and I jury rigged it to get me in gear and hold it there until I got it properly fixed. It was good fun until I hit Col de Merton Road when having to maintain 20mph to the top got to be less fun. Nuff respect to the SS/Fixie posse

    I would go off on one about Road based MTB being......

    But I won't bother.

    Suggest you don't take your brakes off for the moment though - that should probably be left until after you've converted to fixed hub and also been lobotomised into the bargain.

    Enjoy the simplicity of pushing your girder based transport around on a single gear.
    Fixed gear for wet weather / hairy roadie for posing in the sun.

    What would Thora Hurd do?

    Erm, yep! Half the joy of fixed/SS is the lack of weight.
