ahhh i have doomed my self now and im off to a local bike shop that has an old beat up 351 fram in my size and all the other bits to make up a single speed. all for the sum of £80 all second hand and all sounding good. have to put it together my self so i may be in the garrage alot over the weekend.

I have a feeling that the pastle purple of the frame will even beat the gollum bike for looks. :P

I'll wait until the end of pay next month, will then look into the Fuji Track Bike. Still wary of this for them thar Devon hills. May leave at the GF's for Teddington/London amusement of the weekend.

Now that sounds like my sort of bike!! I reckon it'll be much nicer to ride than a cheap OTP one. Result!

    Bonus... :-)

tra la laa laaa laaaaaa...oh hello what's this pauses and glances over

why if it isn't a wee little fixie thread...huzzah!

symo, make the switch you will not regret it. WGGWGGWGGWG Buns, you'll be astonished to hear I may be downgrading my hooj ring size for something a little spinnier!

A question though, I read on londonffsgsgggsfsfsfgggsgs that shorter cranks = easier on the knees, now by my understanding of physics I would have thought this meant harder leverage to turn them round. Thoughts anyone? Cos I need something to help my hurty knees, I'm currently on 175 cranks

    Hi,
I think the issue is that the ends of longer cranks have to travel further per revolution, so your feet will have to go faster to keep the same road-speed. The force on the pedals may not be as high but you're doing more work just keeping your feet moving. Hence short cranks feel better at high cadence whereas long ones make it easier to lever your ATB over a huge rock at 3mph...

This is seperate from the biomechanical relationship between leg-length and crank-length, where you want to avoid over taxing your joints by exercising at inappropriate angles.

I'm no expert on this, though...

    Cheers,
    W.

You see! For all the MTFU comments and flack I took when I strated my Buns inspired experiment in spinnier gearing the pendulum has started to swing.

I'm going to get one tooth more on the back, move to 48:17 and see how that goes.

Litts, if your knees are playing up it might be best if you stopped playing "hide the sausage" with Mrs L. She can get quite sweat on when she's "the hider", I imagine your discomfort is down to friction burns from your cheap acrylic carpet.
Fixed gear for wet weather / hairy roadie for posing in the sun.

    What would Thora Hurd do?

I take no hard man chat from a chap who looks like he's no stanger to the inside of a "grooming salon". I've seen rougher Playschool presenters.

    Grrrr

Litts, if you want to see me get home sharpish, I've got to be out of here by 1700hrs and I don't fancy what you've got for dinner. Your toothbrush needs replacing BTW.

Sorry Dude, even I can't get home from your house THAT quickly! Besides it takes ages to untie your missus from all these ropes!

I shall call it a fixie-wixie from now on, I think.
  • Isn't it actually a fixed gear, if we're being like that... Or have I got it all backwards again?

Righty hoe then Just finaly finished the bike......
After the first 2 hours of rubbing hte frame down to the bare renolds 351 I realised that...
    1) my hand anre amrs where about to fall off
    2) to save my sanity im going to have to give up on the bare stripped look i was lusting for.
    3) my hands and arms are about to fall off.

So i have my new bike built and riding well its got a 44/16 ratio 531 1970s frame and its a nice blue with yellow cabel ties and yellow tape on the bars. Its all masses of un named kit and cost the princly sum of £100 in cluding a £20 lock and 2 new tyers.
The rim brake pads may need a look sooner rather than later and i need to get a new computer to see how fast she goes.

Pics will follow once i get photobucket up and running....... also can some one post hte link to the thread on how to post pics?

Ta all for the help advice and encouragement now if you would all like to stand along hte big hill i have to ride up to get to the bike shop for my new computer to chear my on i would be help full
