Tough tyres

I've clocked up 1,800 miles around London on a pair of Specialized All Condition Armadillos - had my first flat on the way to work today (thanks to going straight over a smashed wine bottle).
Is there be a tougher 700/25 tyre for road use available?

    1,800 miles is good going.

I've swapped to Schwalbe Marathon Plus, they are generally considered the armour plated choice but are "sticky" and unfast. Fast and flat or slow and fat.

    I've just made that up

    Continnental GP 4000s

Not sure how they compare to the tyres mentioned but in the wet or dry I love them.

You like 'em you should try the GP400S', only come in black but F@ck me they are good tyres.

I manages about 1k out of my Specialized All Condition Armadillos before being plagued with flats (mostly sharp flints and glass). They seemed to have a finite life expectancy to them.

Switched to Schwalbe Marathon Pluses - 700x25c (£38 for the pair from http://www.bikeplus.co.uk/), and have yet to be blessed with a visit from the pf but only 300miles under belt since change.

Ride is *very* different to the Spesh, and took a little getting used to, less tendancy to slip sideways, much less harsh, but with a slight weird marshmallow feel cornering!

They are a right PITA to fit - don't underestimate how long it will take - particularly when you forget the bike is upside down so your assuming about rolling direction was wrong!

I have the Schwalbe Marathon Plus on the rear and a standard marathon on the front. Never had a p*** in about 1200 mile of slow comfortable commuting since fitting. There not that bad to fit, but then mine are the fat ones (35's???). Id get the thinner ones next I think. they are heavy.
it looks a bit steep to me.....

I thought I was the only one who'd noticed that so I kept quiet about it. Do you sometimes get that feeling like just for a brief moment one of the wheels caught a groove in the road, like slipping off the side of a particularly thick painted white/yellow line, or something?

I'm just about to put a new set of GP4000's on. The set I'm taking off have done just over 2000 puncture free miles! I would go for the 'S' version, but they don't come in yellow! That's just make my bar tape lonely.

My Armadillos have been great apart from the sidewall blowout I had on my last set. Heavy and ugly though.

  • Continental Touring Plus.
I do canal towpaths in my conmuting, and Mondays is usually broken beer bottles party.
They give me good grip on the gravel and mud, and by the ammount( and size!) of glass I am removing every weekend, they are doing a fantastic job.
600 miles , so far, with no punctures.

    I have marathon plus 26 x 1.75, rock solid.

I commute during the week on roads then usually get a 60 mile canal run in at the weekend, some horrible terrain but the plus's cope brilliantly.
