sorry if this has already been covered; I want to lcok my bike up outside a cafe on a ride while I go in and purchase the required bacon and egg barm and a brew !!! but dont waqnt to have to carry a big heavy lock around. Does anyone know of a lightweight solution / lock ??
Also have just found out my insurance does not cover my bikes when out of the house and need a cheap policy to cover the bikes when I am out from theft. Anyone have cover for theft at a reasonable rate, bikes are worth £2700 (mtb) and £1300 (roadbike) if this helps??
any help on both appreciated :?:

Bike specific insurance tends to cost around 10% of the value of the bike, It will probably cheaper to switch your home insurance to a bike friendly policy rather than get a bike specific policy.
Often bike insurance doesn't cover theft of individual components so if your bike is stripped and your frame is left behind you may find you get no payout - so make sure you check the small print.
Bike insurance companies tend to mandate a specific category of lock, and for bikes worth as much as yours they are certainly not lightweight. Another thing worth noting is that a number of these expensive locks carry a guarantee that they will replace your bike if it is stolen - providing certain conditions are met, so whats the point in the insurance ?0 -
House Insurance cover mine - £4k limit per bike, and a cheap crappy cable lock covers me whilst out and about. No additional premiumCarlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos0

And who is your house insurer0 -
It's a specific policy for my wife as a Childminder - policy is with Zurich IIRC. They were also cheaper than M&SCarlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos0

Lucky you. M&S won't quote for me. Don't know why and hadn't time to phone them to find out why!0 -
perhaps I could try zurich and m&s, I am currently with eagle star who will cover it in the house, but I need cover outside of the house as that is where it is more likely to get nicked. I have looked at cycle specific, but they wanted around £270 for the both and the list of get out clauses seemed endless, unless someone can recommend a good one of these.
thanks for the insurance info, I will try m&s and zurich and see if they cover away from home.
thanks0 -
I've just finished shopping round for insurance and settled on E&L (http://www.eandl.org.uk/cp). Insured my £750 tourer for £5.11 per month. There's a cheaper option, a one-off annual payment equivalent to 10 months' cover (ie. £51.10) but with lower benefits.
From their premiums list:
£1300 bike = ~£9.65 per month (~£11.25 if you're racing)
£2700 bike = ~£17.50/month (~£21.75 if racing)
Like the rest though, they've got the "recommended lock" requirement to go with it.
EDIT:
If you can do them both on the same policy (dunno if it works that way) it's a bit cheaper - £4000 = £26 per month.0
