I don't know if there is any one who knows this stuff but I've not seen a sniff of 3G and i'm near the centre of Manchester.

Any one else have 3G problems?

You should get signal, take it to your phone shop, i used to work selling phones in a Vodafone shop, you could have the 3g turned off? Not familiar with the i-phone un-fortunately but phones do go wrong, i'm currently in Bath and have full 3g signal on my Nokia so seems odd that you don't in Manchester, which network are you on? Are you contract or payg, how old is phone? How old is sim card?

3G kills your battery, if you dont use it, turn it off. I have a good 50% more battery life without it. Which is about another 2 days  .

    I'm on an O2 contract.

Got the phone on Sunday, but the Sim card is a good few years old. 3G is switched on, my friend has an iphone - we've put the phones next to each other sometimes he's got 3G but I never do.

I'd go to the shop, they should have a gadget that can swap all your numbers onto a new sim card if that doesn't work quickly get replacement other-wise if it goes over a week they'll more than likely insist on sending it for repair, might be worth swaping sims with your mate to see if it's the sim :?:

So its a new phone, with an old sim card?

Talk to 02 customer services, and get them to send you a new 3g sim card, then you can transfer the number to that card and it will work.

Not all sim cards have the necessary 3G-ness.

Make sure you have the latest firmware update installed as well.

It's the Sim card - I've had it for about 5 years I just need to drag myself to the O2 shop tomorrow to get one.

I'll probably have 3G switched off most of the time, but it would be handy for when I'm using the internet at uni/pub/whereever and I'm outside of the free wifi zone.

I use my phones internet once a week (ish) and havent noticed a difference in loading times between 3G on or off. It just seems to suck the life out of my battery just by having a 3g icon on the screen.

I can get 2days battery out of the phone purely using it as a phone ( still with 3g enabled ) However as soon as I start using the web, GPS etc then I'll get a day before the battery is flat...

It's almost definitely the sim card, as others here have said and also my Mrs who works as an advisor for O2 agrees- you need a 3g sim card...
