Re-painting a classic bike - what colour scheme?

I've come into possession of a Falcon steel bike frame in Team Banana livery.
My 11 yo son has decide to rebuild the bike and we've agreed that it should be restored first as the paint is tatty.
Problem is, he isn't too enamoured on the current colour schme but I've managed to sell him on repainting in traditional colours.
We've had a look around the net, but couldn't find any inspiration. Any suggestions?

What year is it? Some early '70s mid-range Falcons were I think orange with white panels.

Not sure. How would I be able to tell?

No idea! Components might give some clues e.g. number of gears, down tube shifters, alloy/steel rims, stem, bars, type of brakes? Unless an obviously high-end model, might as well just do whatever colour takes your fancy!

  • How about this - suitable banana-ish!

I personally had a lovely falcon in dark purple with white panels in the mid 70's which was a lot more tasteful :)

I like the sound of the deep purple and black. Any images that I can give him to work from?

Thanks by the way Simon for the banana image, it's a good fall back.

Sorry no images. I've just built up a mountain bike up with this colour scheme. The frame and forks were purple and the chainset, stem and rack were black. I thought it was cool at the time, but I am nearly 50 and think T Rex are cool.

Cool. I think a similar them but with black instead of white would be smart, but then it isn't my choice, it's the boy's. As he's only 11 he thinks T-Rex was a dinosaur. saying that, I only know who they are because my dad told me!!!!!

I know I'm getting on a bit but don't rub it in too much. For you young whippersnappers. T Rex were The Band , just so ahead of their time. Glam Rock was such a breath of fresh air in an era of black and white, power cuts and 3 day weeks

you're welcome. Tere is another site somewhere. If I find it I'll post it. Hillary Stone wrote some excellent articles on classic road bikes in C+ over the years. Worth picking up some old back issues just for those alone.
    good luck restoring the frame
