Hello,

could someone please recommend a set of light pedals that go well with a recommended set of toeclips? I want something that I can use with my normal karrimor hybrid shoes, I have size 11 feet.

    sorry no.

there is just about nothing out there.

why do you want to use those dangerous things anyway?
I binned mine in 1997 when i found the joys of SPD's

If you insist, Ison do a couple of pretty good flats for toeclips.

But, seriously, SPDs are so much safer.
  • Thank you for the advice guys, time to start making recommendations for the safer options then please.

£30 for some Shimano M520 pedals
£50 for some Specialized Sonoma shoes

    Is about where I'd start.
  • Brilliant, what does everyone else think?

Is there a particular website you would recommend for the purchase of these?

If you look round the forum, there's a few other posts asking about spd shoes and pedals.
If you don't find anything that quite answers your question, you'll probably get more useful answers if you start another topic asking about spds and shoes.

    As above, great combo.

try Merlin, CRC, and All Terrain Cycles. Wiggle too.

Ison do some pedals with toe straps from £20. as BRS says.

I have to ask what will your usage be? as straps still have a place but In the MTB world they are redundant.

The 520s are spot on if you want SPDs - I actually ended up going for Time ATACs in preference to SPDs but to each their own.

However, I would really advise against buying your shoes online. I tried some Shimano shoes and they were completely the wrong shape for my foot - too long and narrow - tried some others and ended up going for Spesh MTB Sport; £60 in an LBS, IIRC. Online is great for most things but, where fit is important, LBS every time...

  • Took the spd plunge myself a couple of weeks back ... don't know what took me so long!

Got the Shimano M520's from Merlin cycles at £17.50:

Merlin do some good pedal + shoe deals. I just bought some 520's and Shimano MT51's for £49.99 combined but I think they are running out of sizes now. They do the 520's on their own for £17.50. I agree to some extent with Underscore's advice about trying on but you can always return with internet if not right or try at LBS and then buy online. BTW, I took advice on the Shimano shoes and went for size 46 instead of my usual 45 and they fit fine.

Just went onto the Merlin site again, MT31's available on the same deal in all sizes http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/?fn=produ ... goryId=136 so may be worth looking for the shoes you like and see if available.

Fair enough, you can return shoes bought on the internet if the website permits. However, I just have to say that I think that trying in a shop and buying online is not acceptable. If you are using a service (the ability to try on shoes) you should pay for it by buying the goods there; if you are not willing to pay for the service, don't use it.

  • what about some pedals which can be used with normal trainers as well, for nipping to the shop etc.

waste of time. they are useless at both things.

  • I've purchased the pedals and like the look of the Specialized trainers, but am trying to find out the cheapest place I can get them from (including P&P).
  • Where is the cheapest place anyone can think of?
  • Someone please make a suggestion.
