A Glasgow taxi driver who deliberately ran down a cyclist he thought had made an obscene gesture at him has been convicted of assault.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard Alistair Palmer mounted the pavement and swerved into Michael Martin twice on Auchinloch Road in Lenzie on 20 April this year.
I must admit, I'm terrible for gesturing manically at drivers who I feel have put me in danger with a close overtake or other stupid manoeuvre in the hope that an obvious gesture (no, not a 'finger', just a disgruntled hand in the air) will maybe make them think next time they see a cyclist.

Perhaps I need to try to keep my calm…

Now I hope he's swabbed and DNA'd and his genes cross checked with other offences. Seems like there was no need for that.

Is this sort of thing getting more common? There is also a thread:

I definitely think that levels of aggression are going up & that drivers are far more likely to 'lose it' than they used to .

    Assault? Was that it?

If I push you in the shoulder, that's assault. If I try to run over you in my car surely that's a bit further up the scale?

    GAH!

Insane. I don't know what he should be done for, but I agree that assault seems a bit light.

It doesn't however grade the assauly- it can cover the situation where you repeatedly stab someone- down to what you describe. A S18 wounding in English Law is little different to an Attempted Murder

Don't see anything in the article to indicate that he was...

It appears he was knocked there by the driver's bonnet.
