Sold Secure Silver Locks and Insurance

Hi,
I am about to buy a new bike and with it plan to buy insurance. The bike I am looking to buy is worth £650 and therefore any insurance requires Sold Secure Silver standard locks.
Having had a brief browse around in Evans cycles today all the locks seems extremely heavy. I was wondering if anyone could recommend what the lightest lock is that conforms to Sold Secure Silver requirement?
Also on a slightly different note is public liability cover worth paying for, I've never been in any situation before that I've needed such cover and can't really see myself being in one in the future. Am I wrong in presuming this - is it worth paying the extra £1 monthly premium for?
Sorry for yet another question but I am 16, do you know of any good insurance companies that would give me a student discount?
Thanks in advance,
Alex

The lock has to weigh as much as the bike. Look on it as fitness training.

For a pound a month you'd be protecting yourself from being sued for hundreds of thousands, or even millions, if you cause someone permanent injury or disability or even death. So yes, get liability insurance - a number of people here would argue it's MORE important than insuring your own bike. You wouldn't want to be crippled by an uninsured driver, for example.0

Evans is pricey, so if you're on that tight a budget shop around.
£1 a month? Pay it. Compare it with 3rd party insurance for motorists.
Stoodent discount? Perhaps, but stoodents get bikes knicked at megarate so I doubt it. However,
Some companies offer stoodent discounts because:
in future you'll be a high earner with a house and a car and a life to insure.
you'll be too lazy or too busy too switch to another company then. This post contains traces of nuts.0 -
For £1/month = £12/year you could become a student member of CTC - including, amongst other things, £10 million liability insurance (I think).
As it comes with some extras, I personally would go for that. There is another cycling group with similar (maybe better?) cover - don't know them myself, but I'm sure someone here will give the link to them.
Was the £1/month through Evans?
The silver standard (I believe) lock I have is the Trelock FS400. Folds away quite nicely and I don't think it is too heavy. Do check it is silver standard, though (and if you get it watch you don't trap your fingers!).
