Hi all

Hope you are all well and here's some big news for you. There is to be an open meeting called by British Cycling for the formation of a Bike Club to be housed at Perry Park, Perry Barr where an International standard BMX and Mountainbike facility will be built! The meeting will be at the Alexander Stadium, on Monday 20th October 2008 at 7:30pm. (We need all those whom are in favour of the BMX track and Bike Park development to go ahead to attend the meeting and show their support).

The development will be of the highest standards and is exactly what the West Midlands needs for the Olympic sports of BMX and mountain biking. Birmingham City Council are bidding for the 2012 World BMX Championships and this development is part of the legacy from the event. The budget for phase one of the Bike Park is £400,000 for the BMX track, fenceline, cabins and floodlights. Phase two will hopefully include, dirt jumps, technical trails, slopestyle/park obstacles, northshore, trials, skateramps, indoor foam pit, pump track, 4x track and a beginners area including a toddler track / disabled track!

Please please make the time to attend the meeting and spread the word around anyone you know who is interested in cycling. Please forward this email on to your contacts and by all means please email me for the flyer from BC and display it where young people will see it (eg local bike shops / youth centres etc).

We look forward to seeing you at the meeting.

Cheers

Will there actually be any XC?
  • yes there should be a xc loop around the perimeter of the woodland to be used for northshore and jumps etc. it should be around 1km long and it will include loads of line options. will be great for xc skills training and fitness training.

phase one will be the BMX track, phase two will be the woodland build.

to make the bike park self sustainable the plan is to include as many disciplins as possible to get loads of riders coming to some quality tracks and trails.

  • Hi Mark, good luck with the bike park - it sounds fantastic. Could I ask your advice? We are a couple who have recently moved to Birmingham. We have been to Shropshire, the Malverns, the peaks and Wales on weekends and loved it. However we would like to ride a bit more regularly, eg, night rides midweek, and discover some local routes. It would be good to join a mountain bike club but I can't seem to find any local ones on the internet. Do you know any clubs, or any riders in Brum who might be keen to meet up?

Hi there - only just spotted your note about clubs in the City. There are a few groups around but hopefully this will be on the increase soon as the City Council are just about to launch a revised cycling strategy which will include initiating and supporting more clubs/groups in the City. Which part of Birmingham are you currently looking to start your rides from?

Have you ridden at Cannock Chase yet or Sutton Park?

If you get in touch with the guys over at chase trails they may be able to tell you when some organised rides go on at the Chase.

try visiting mtbbritain.co.uk to see when some of the guys meet up for Chase or Sutton Park rides.

please come along to the next meeting regards the Bike Club at Perry Park, it is pencilled in for December the 1st, i will post again when the date and venue /time is confirmed from British Cycling.

Funniest bit of bad English I've read for ages. And the follow-up was priceless.
    :lol::lol:

That's another keyboard ruined while reading this forum
  • to answer the repeated question / sentance and quality use of english regarding the foam pit:

the foam pit and woodland development will be phase two of the Bike Park development that will be in Perry Park. The proposed location of the BMX track isn't next to the Alexander Stadium but on the other side of the park by Aldridge road and the M6.

Ah hell, don't worry toooo much about speeling or english, it does help a bit though when your older.

The facility will be a pay to ride facility but the fees to ride will be kept as low as possible to ensure maximum uptake of cycling at the Bike Park. Gate practice might cost £3 or £4, maybe less. obviously details like that will be inline with other bike/ bmx clubs up and down the country and reflect how much it costs to do other sports like tennis or swimming etc.

the next meeting for the formation of the Bike Club will be 7:30pm 1st December, at the House of Sports, 300 Broad Street, Birmingham. Email from BC follows:

    Hi All

The next meeting regarding the formation of a new BMX club at Perry Park will be at 7.30pm on Monday 1st December at the House of Sport, 300 Broad Street Birmingham.

The purpose of this meeting will be to nominate a committee for the club, decide on a club name and submit initial registration documents to British Cycling. It would also be useful to discuss initial club development plans for 2009.

I will compile a brief agenda based on the above, I would also welcome any further suggestions for this agenda. I propose that the meeting close by 9.30pm.

May I thank Gary Peal for arranging the meeting venue, please be aware that there is parking available in the area but generally not free parking.

Please pass on these details to anyone who may be interested, if you have any questions prior to the evening I can be contacted on the details below.

    Regards

I don't consider myself "out of the loop", being only 18, neither am I posh, gay or "bati", and last time I checked, repeating the same question in really, really bad English three times wasn't slang. and I'm sorry but:

    To answer the question......

No. the foam pit is not ready. The building of the facility has not even started. It is still only being proposed. Technically, it may never be built!

All your foam pit are belong to us. Catz

yes technically the foam pit may never be built, but the BMX track most definately will. there is a big commitment from the council to deliver all aspects of the bike park to ensure its longevity / self sustainability.

If any of you live in birmingham / west midlands and you want input on how the facility develops then please get involved with the set up of the club.

using foul and abusive language isn't acceptable, using bad english is acceptable, but you have to be prepared to get a bit of stick for it.

see you at the meeting guys....

p.s. i was one of the first guys to start building at four oaks, with si and the lads many many years ago, it is great to see it as good as it is.
