Hi,

I'm going to buy one of these two bikes through cycle scheme this week but don't know which to go for? There seems to be little between them, I like the clean lines of the Kona as oppose to the Gt triple triangle frame but looks not that important. The GT seems to have slightly better spec, Recon fork over the DART and XT rear derailleur instead of LX.

Any thoughts on these two bikes? Can't seem to find the weights anywhere to compare that way.

On spec alone the GT, but if you don't like the way it rides...

Best bet is to test ride them both

  • Yeah, testing them a bit of a limitation though as far as I'm aware with Bikehut/Halfords.

Suppose that's the downside of saving all that lovely tax!

At least have a sit on them, and a ride around the carpark. kick up a stink if they don't let you. Not like riding offoroad, but will give you a feel for size and ride position.

XCR is heavier, but far better specced.

I picked up an XCR last weekend. Haven't had a bike for over 30 years and am really loving it :D
  • think I'll just go and see how much of a try they'll give me and then pick one and get myself back out there! Cant wait to get back on the trails!

Personally feel that some of the lower spec Kona hardtails are underrated on here.

Light and great to ride. Excellent bike.

golden rule, if the bike does not fit you it does not matter if it is the best specced bike in the world, you will not enjoy it, always try before you buy, i have already made that mistake myself, tell halfords if they will not let you try it you will go somewhere else, i am sure in todays economic climate they will not want you to do that, but they are very funny about test rides, it is something to do with suing them if you fall off, their after sales service is crap speaking from my experience, but some stores have very good mechanics it is the luck of the draw really!
  • I pretty much had decided on the Kona as I'd passed over the Gt's as i don't like the 'look' of the triple triangle frames, but then noticed a few higher specced parts which to be honest won't make much difference to the riding I'll be doing but the fork is the main thing which looks a betetr buy- how much difference is there between the Dart3 and the recon?

    dart poor, recon very good.

the recon is miles better, a lot lighter and far more ajustable!

The Recon is quite a bit higher in the RS line up, pretty good forks, the Dart is the basic fork, then the Tora, then the Recon.

I'd go for the GT personally, provided it fits you & you like the ride.

  • Cheers all, I'll try and try them out and see what's more comfortable.

    thanks for the advice.

Recon is Brazil to the Dart's San Marino.

Makes a huge difference - but basic fit and feel is just as important.
