Cycling, not only in Yorkshire but Nationally has sadly lost one of its brightest lights with the tragic death of Stuart Holdsworth.
Well known for his promotion of the Etape du Dales and his work with the Dave Rayner Fund; Stuart will be sadly missed. After the White Rose Classic last year the first email I received was from Stuart congratulating us an a successful event, a mark of the sort of man that Stuart was.
In recent years I'd not seen much of him but he seems to have been around at some fairly important times in my own cycling life. Way back in 1973 he organised the West Yorkshire Road Race Championships where a then lanky youth from Wakefield crossed the line first. Back then he was the Team Selector for the West Yorkshire Team and on the back of what he'd seen he took a punt on me to join the team the year after as a first year senior. Sadly I never lived up the potential that he saw. Others did and I'm sure will remember too the "step up" that Stuart gave them.
