Hi there, looking for some help and advice. Currently running a 2003 gt avalanche 1 as my offroad bike its upgraded a little - lx shifters and rear mech, shimano M442 front chain set and replacement cassette, running tektro auriga brakes but otherwise fairly std. do I look to continue upgrading it- wheel bearings haven't got much left in them and rims and only single wall - or do i plump for a replacement bike?
Im doing more and more offroading and want something thats capable, I'm not too bothered for full sus unless it will benefit me and whilst upgrading to the likes of deore XT appeals I question if I'd notice much of an improvement as a relatively amateur rider. Can anyone offer any help????
Thanks

Wheels/forks/tyres all make the biggest difference to a bikes handling & these are the most worthwhile upgrades
You could spend from £100 on a wheelset, from £150 on a set of forks & from ~£40 on tyres, that's nearly £300, just for half decent kit
The question is do you feel the bike warrants ~£300 spending on it or would the £300 be better saved towards a new bike.
I like to keep old bikes going, but sometimes it's just not worth the expense.0 -
Generally don't bother upgrading drivetrains, just replace with better once worn out.
New wheels are always nice, along with brakes and forks.
It's a matter of what is important for you, IIRC you'll want 150 for decent wheels (719 on xt hubs from merlin) and about 130 for some decent entry level hydro brakes (hayes strokers again from merlin) and about 150-250 for a decent fork such as rebas or toras.
Now that's a fair wack, but you'll need to spend a fair bit more again to get a new bike thats better than it, and it wont be personalised. The avalanche is a good frame and worth sticking better stuff on. Plus eventually you can always migrate your gear onto a new frame!
WARNING: This upgrading lark is great fun, addictive and bad for your bank balance.0
