On the way home tonight came to a set of traffic lights i have passed hundreds of times, stopped on the asl unclipped and waited.

Thing is the asl is forward of the lights, but using it every day have got a good judgement of the timings. so started to pull away a little ahead of when the lights changed. rode 50 yards a a couple of the local constabualry told me to stop and put the blues on. got a lecture on pedestrian safety, (when there wasn't any pedestrians around) and my own safety.

explained been using this road for years and stop at every red light, but they wern't having it. Then out the corner of my eye i caught a chav on a mountain bike on the path riding through pedestrians, pointed out to the boy and girl in blue, "is that not more of a offence and was a £60 fine."

could have started a rant but after a 12 hour shift couldn't be a!"£d. so just rode off muttering under my breath all the way home.

    Rule 1.

When pulled by the rozzers say yes sir no sir three bags full sir.

    Rule 2.

    Refer to Rule 1.

*Unless they start writing a ticket in which case you can give vent to your true feelings as you've nothing to lose.

Every drunk driver thinks they have good judgement. You admit in you post you went through a red light. What's your problem?

While I can see your view point, you did break the law.

Just nod say yes and sorry and move on.

Yes, the copper were probably being prats but how amy accident are caused by driver jumping red lights, especially on junctions?
  • Where do you live??? If they got time to be pulling you over for things like that then I would like to transfer up there and work!!!

I don't run reds, I can't see the point. I would rather piss off car drivers by taking up space at the lights and then hold them up by slowly moving off and clipping in. If they complain I just give it back about their fixation with cyclists running reds and they can't have it both ways.

The lights in question are near the sprinfield hotel where theres 2 sets one after the other.
  • you don't really have any defense. Did they walk over to the 'chav'?

Take photos of the ASL and report it to the council, sounds like its not properly laid out. Tell them you've been told off by the police for it (though legally you're obliged to wait behind the lights until green - sounds like this ASL does a fat lot of good and could be putting people in danger)
  • At the end of the day you committed an offence. Simple as that. No defences. Best just to apologise and vent you frustration in private (you choose how!) Trust me, officers do get peeved off when they stop a motorist (or cyclist) for an offence and are meet with a response along the lines of "But look at them over there, surely worse than me."

Also, consider this. If you hadn't committed your offence, they just might have stopped the 'chav' instead!
  • But that is a reasonable thing to have done - who would have gained by you waiting for 2 seconds more? Noone was in danger by the sound of it. If the police officer has an ounce of common sense they would turn a blind eye to that.

    To quote, more or less, a law book I read 15 years ago, whilst a sproggy woodentop;
"... unfortunately common sense is not as common as is commonly thought and actions which might be described as common sense and commonly thought of as common sense may not be sensible under many situations." - or something very close to that...

I remember thinking it was one of those <smile moments>.

Jobsworth c*nts is the first thing that springs to my mind. Can you imagine if they started pulling over motorist for doing 31mph in a 30! There would be a national melt down!!

Pulling over a motorist for speeding involves discussions as to the accuracy of measuring equipment.
Seeing which side of a line someone is on when a particular light is on doesn't.

It happens. Maybe they were bored, maybe one of them got irritated by someone on a bike haring through a pedestrian crossing, maybe they've been told to clamp down on cyclists going through reds?
Either way, their job is to enforce the law, so where they see it broken its entirely reasonable for them to point this out to the perpetrator.
I should imagine the chav on the bike felt as justified as to his postion as the OP did in his. Else it's likely he wouldn't have been there.
