Im a keen MTB rider and i have now started to commute to work ( 5 min each way but its a commute 8) )
What i want is a single speed with a hill friendly gear. i have at most £200 in my pocket to burn on this project.
I am a keen fettler with my MTB and can do all but bottom brackets and heat tubes ( but a can always give it a go with the part tools web site.) this Bike will also be used for week end shopping trips to leeds form pudsey ( about 10 mile round trip) so i dont want to to look too nice as it will get chained up in the center of leeds and i would also like full mud gards ( have seen some carbon fiber ones in a LBS........ no no no must fight the urge to bling up the bike).

So whats teh best ( read cheepest) way forward..... ebay clunker and then strip the frame back to a single speed god ? or ebay for a cheap frame and wheels or go to my LBS and have a look.? I have no clue about whats good for a road biek and whats not.

I will also be using cheep shimano spds to work with my MTB shoes.

thanks for all teh advice up front. ( the reson for the cheap price is a want a bike that wont kill me if it gets pinched fomr leeds. )
