Hello to all

Have recently decided to get back on the bike after a decade or more of inactivity with the aspiration of commuting to work (12.5 mile each way).

After a false start due to 10 days of constant rain I manage to cover 45 mile last week to try and build up a basic level of fitness so I can make the journey to work without collapsing at the end.

Reading other posts are inspiring, there are some serious commuters out there.

No real point to the post just a hello!!

12.5 miles is a good stint. Stick with it, and you'll soon wonder why is was such an effort the first few times.

Welcome to the forum. Feel free to post any old thoughts that randomly occur to you - that's what seems to happen on here as often as not.

    :)

...Wheezy stay clean...stay away from silly commuting racing...

    Hi Wheezy

    Good commute length.
When i started this coummuting malarkey i thought 6.6 miles each way was going to be a struggle, but now four months on i want a much longer commute.

Watch out for thinking you have all the basic gear it never works you will find yourself scritnising web sites looking for the next piee of kit you can buy

    Welcome The Wheeze!

I was in the same position as you at the start of the summer - hadn't done much exercise other than typing and lifting a coffee cup for a decade or so. I built up some training miles in the summer evenings and now I can commute the 9ish miles to work 3 or 4 days a week without too much trouble. Stick at it!

    Whatcha riding?
Today is a good day to ride

Commuter racing may not happen as I'm safely out of the way on Northern Ireland's North Coast.

BTW what are the FCN's of a jogger, an old women walking a dog and a little girl on a Dora the Explorer Trike, thats all the Scalps to date.

Any one in to motorbikes will know the roads I am currently working up a bit of fitness on as the circuit of the North West 200. Any one else may have heard of the Giants Causeway, Royal Portrush golf club or Bushmills Whiskey, all local attractions.

That gets me thinking what about a thread on the most scenic commutes, might just start one!

  • Hi and welcome. I've only recently started commuting too and am doing a similar distance to you. You'll be amazed at how quickly you get used to it.

I'm a relative newbie to the fourm too - but because I'm from London the people outside London ignore me because they think the forum is becoming too London-centric and don't want to encourage any more of us and the people from London ignore me because that's what Londoners do - Listen to The Jam's Strange Town - and because I'm not part of the clique ( There, managed to P everyone off in a sentence :D  ) - only joking folks

You'll find the forum a great source of inspiration and advice. And you're commute sounds lovely.
