Loved my first Fenix which I bought with a smooth reflector. I run it in turbo flashing mode. Then I read about the orange peel reflectors and the great idea of having a smooth beam with the OP reflector and a flashing light with the smooth reflector, so I've just bought a Fenix with the orange peel reflector.

Now this looks REMARKABLY similar to the other Fenix what I got. There is no indication on the packet to say that this latest purchase is Orange peel. However, there is a difference if you look down the torch bell. The OP one looks like it's got very small pin prick acne spots, and the smooth one doesn't have any acne spots.

So I'm guessing that I have got an OP reflector installed since this is what orange peel means.

Quite cool in that case, just wanted to check to be sure!

Cheers J

You have an OP. Just look at the beam, the OP one is noticeably smoother than the smooth.

Cheers whyamihere. Yeah - haven't used it in anger yet, and shining it against the wall in my house was a little inconclusive!

    Thanks for your reply!

What's the advantage/disadvantage of the orange peel one? Thinking of picking up a couple of Fenixes any week now.

Well apparently the smooth reflector gives a more direct beam, whereas the orange peel one gives more spill. If it's dark enough gonna test tonight!

Jeepie - how are you getting on with the turbo flash mode ? It says not to be used for more than 10 mins at a time, but I guess on a bike its getting a nice cooling breeze ?

Hey cougie - yeah I just read and forget that!

My commute is short but takes 25 mins so longer than the recommended turbo mode use. But I do plan to use in turbo mode until it croaks because I assume that the 10 mins limit is if the light is stationary due to the heat generation of the light.

I'm going about 12mph and the ambient temperature these days is cool, so I'm guessing I will be ok. At least I just bought a second one if I'm wrong!!!!

So to answer directly. I have had no probs on my commute whatsoever and run for over double the recommended turbo mode time.

Sure certainly will Cougie. Now I've got good lights I'm v tempted to go for a midnight spin on the Bianchi! This will definitely require a long run time so if I get round to it I'll let you know the results and also any other probs I encounter.

    Cheers

I bought a L2D Q5 last winter and used it on Turbo whenever I was using it on the bike... up to 1 hour in duration. No issues what so ever.
  • I'm looking at buying one of these, I have it in the shopping basket, and ready to hit the button, Do I?

Yes. Yes. In a few months time you'll have the light and you will not be worried about the money....

Well then again... .that's Christmas time, so may be you will, but hit submit anyway!

Regarding Turbo mode the instructions say: "Due to its high power consumption, and excessive amount of heat may build up. Under high ambient temperatures, please do not use the Turbo Mode for more than 10 minutes continuously."

So night riding in winter should be fine. Just don't go riding round with it on turbo mode in the height of summer (in a country where they have warm summers).

In town the rocket nosecone diffuser thing is fantastic for all-round visibility, great in flashing mode if you can stand it. When you hit the lanes you whip it off and stow it in a jersey pocket.

I've just bought the diffusers - I'm a sucker for shiny gadgets. They're amazing - I think I'd tape them on at night though - just to be safe. I bet red on the rear would be a good look ?

had a look at the fenix website - they look almost too good to be true. Do they really have the performance of Hope/Exposure/Dinotte at a fraction of the price?

Haven't got any photos but smooth is a bit like water coming straight out of a jet pressure hose, and OP is a bit like a watering can. See what I mean???

This may be b&ll&x but this is my impression from using them so far. Both are awesome. I do actually prefer the OP if I'm using on constant to see by, whereas I think the smooth can project further so I feel that makes me more visible on flashing.

Jedster - I had the Dinotte 3W on and a £40 Fenix on the bars at the same time. I think I paid £120 or so for the Dinotte a couple of years back.

It was good with both of them, but then the run life on my batteries for the Dinotte went - so I ran with the Fenix on alone - and there really wasnt much difference. If I had to choose between the two - the Fenix every time. Half the batteries and much neater package and the beam is brighter.

I've just got a £10 Tesco torch to strap on my helmet - be interesting to see if the Fenix is 4x as good - I'm sure the Fenix is a sturdier item, and more modes - but for £10.....
