Well winter is nearly here and I need some help on what clothing to wear and obviously to buy. I want to keep the cost down as much as possible so could anyone give me any help, and with any makes and models that you would reccomend.

Cheers

some wicking lycra leggings, waterproof gloves and socks (sealskinz) long sleeved lycra top and then your regular stuff over the top.

Oh gilets are really good as well.

I use leg warmers along with my summer shorts to keep cost down. I have a cheap Aldi pair & a windproof DHB pair which Wiggle have for 30% off at the moment :-)

If you want to ride throughout the winter though, you can't really save on waterproofs. Buy the best you can afford!

Speedos and smear lard over the rest of your body. Well, it works for swimming the channel...

Plenty of thin layers works best for me - and themal liners for the gloves.

Start off with a 100% merino base layer for your top, these are great at wicking, keep you really warm and don't stink. Over that either just use a windproof top or a jersey + windproof if really cold. Obviously if it's raining to use a waterproof :p

I only tend to use tights or knee-warmers when it's really cold otherwise I find shorts are OK (it's not great to let your knees get freezing cold though on long rides).

On your feet wear merino socks or seal skins and overshoes. If it's really wet/muddy where you ride then consider waterproof shoes/boots to (I have Spesh Defrosters but prefer to wear normal shoes + neoprene overshoes unless it's really bad).

For gloves I only wear thick thermal gloves on bitterly cold days, I stick with normal long fingered gloves otherwise. Personally I use the Seal Skins technical MTB gloves for those cold days but last winter I found the tips of my fingers still getting numb with cold so might try something else this year.

Get a headband or skull cap to, all those cooling vents might be great in summer but not so good in winter :p

    Hi Kristian,

I would look at dhb gear from wiggle, very good quality for the price.

If that is too much go to your local ALDI, I went in today and bought a winter cycle jacket for £14.99 just for a backup, I'll try it out tomorrow. Winter bib tights I think were going for a paverotti. Also I bought a pair of winter gloves £3.99 you can't go wrong at these prices.
Now where's that "Get Out of Crash Free Card"

Well I tried the Aldi winter cycle jacket out today, riding for just over 31/2 hours covered 34 miles. The temperature when I set off was 4C, I didn't chill and didn't overheat so thumbs up.

I have the Aldi compression base layer, the winter trousers, the waterproof trousers, the winter jacket, the gloves and the bike rack!

All very good quality and I don't think you can beat them at the price they are!
    I'd highly recommend them.
