Carrying 2 x 3yo kids

We're considering non-car options for delivering our 3 yo twins to and from nursery/school, which is about 1-1.25 miles away, fairly flat residential roads. One busy road to cross.

Are not wild about trailers, as they look a bit vulnerable, though we are trying one at Center Parcs in a couple of weeks (big strong Daddy is doing the towing!)

Other options might include some form of trike - anyone got any experience and / or recommendations? Would rather not spend the earth on it (of course)!

It's just a hill. Get over it.

  • Didn't Pashley used to do a trike, with two rear facing child seats on the back ?

  • There are some long bikes around designed to carry multiple chldren or loads. Xtracycle is the US main stay then there are lots of dutch and danish designs not available in this country.

I have a post on them in my blog: http://cycledad.blogspot.com/2008/06/long-bikes.html

If you look at the xtracycle, there is a beautiful perfect 2kid customisation here:

I wish xtracycle just did a 2 child seat rack. Seems like veryone in the US is handcrafting thiers.

The filiduo is an older dutch equivalent: http://www.tmannetje.nl/index.htm?kinde ... ~mainFrame

Other options inlcude a tandem with a rear seat? (and they take turns)

Its difficult because at that age they'll be riding themselves before you know it and they are too big for a front and rear seat. The cheapest option will be a trailer, but i agree with you on the vulnerability.
  • How confident are they on their own bikes, quite a few places do tandem tag-alongs.

    30,000 Dutch can't be wrong!

I transport my daughter on this 3 x a week, and then continue riding it to work. 5km each way. 8 speed hub. All cruisey. And she (and her friend, in this pic) LOVE IT!
