Gore Phantom: any owners to help with sizing?

I'm a classic mens MEDIUM. (Medium at M&S, Tesco, and most shops)
5'11 tall, 38-40 chest, 33" waist.
The Gore size gide says:
M = up to 38 chest, 33 waist
L = up to 41 chest, 36 waist.
If you convert the cm guide on their website it makes meduim look a touch smaller than normal. Meduim would be pitched below my normal 38+ (suits are either 38, but more normally 40).
I'm worried that a Large may be baggy and flap as it is up to more than my size?
On paper, the M looks like too tight a fit, and the L will be a bit big. I'm neither one or the other, so advice needed!
I can't try any on as no local stores have any in stock. I'm after any owner of similar size, or of the M or L, to help!

They fit big and are designed to be worn 'next to the skin', so go with the smaller of the two sizes you are in between. GBW has pretty good coverage of dealers nowadays, I'm surprised you can't get one from a shop!?!0

None left round my end to try on...
I'll never wear it next to my skin, as it would need washing too much. I'll settle for a thin base layer next to my pitts, rather than the gore!
