Saddle rails slipping in clamp.

I've just got a new selle Italia XO saddle, the rails arent being clamped tightly enough by the clamp at the top of the seat tube. I think that part of the clamp has been bent a little by the old saddle which had thicker rails.
Is it ok to make a shim and wrap that around the rails to get a good grip with the clamp?
I've read of people using the old aluminium can or rubber from an old inner tube, what do you think?
