Cycling insurance

Seeing as I now do a fair bit of cycling, both on and off-road, and since I have read the horror stories of people being knocked off their bikes and being damaged by/ and damaging other vehicles, I was thinking about accident insurance for me and my bike.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I already have the bike insured for theft and I suppose damage of sorts with my house insurance, but I doubt they'd pay up if I was run over.

I got mine through ETA. Hard to comment further since I haven't had to claim. *touch wood*

CTC and BCF both provide 3rd party insurance. I don't think this covers personal injury though.

  • I have cycle insurance through E and L. http://www.eandl.co.uk/cycle-insurance/
Pretty comprehensive cover for both leisure and racing.
• I've got personal liability cover too as part of my specialist bike insurance (through Cycleguard), its pretty cheap, costs about £2 per month for at least £1m third party liaibility, might be more can't quite remember. I think if you join one of the cycle organisations, you get it free.

Got it for exactly the same reason as you are thinking, an accident might be my fault and I could do quite a lot of damage, especially if I hit a pedestrian. One less think to worry about I guess.

Sorry forgot to add, the Cycleguard insurance covers crash damage to the bike too, but it ain't cheap (when comparing to regular cover under your household insurance which probably doesn't cover you for crash damage) I have it more for when the bikes are being carried in/on the car as we have a company car and the co insurance has minimal personal possessions cover.

    it does cover personal injury

however as it is 3rd party insurance, it will only cover the cost of damage ( inc injury) caused by the cyclist to a 3rd party

I think the OP is asking about insurance to cover injuries that they might incur if involved in an accident. CTC doesn't cover injuries to the insured. But then, if hit by a vehicle the driver's insurance should cover any injuries obtained.

I have been told that the policy that the CTC offers (not their standard 3rd party but the more advanced) is pretty good.

It is now my opinion that life coud be made a little simpler with insurance
  • Aaah, excellent thanks guys!

Some really good places to start by the look of things.

    Specifically. I'm after insurance for:

    a) damage to pedestrians and other vehicles
    b) Damage to my bike and/or other vehicles in case of accident & falling off racks etc
    c) damage to myself (lots of uninsured drivers and hit & runs - so you can't always be sure you can claim from a third party)
    d) Insurance for triathlons/time trials

£20-£30 a year seems a small price for peace of mind, plus I'll be able to say that I do have insurance to the miserable car drivers who believe we shouldn't be on the road.

The CTC membership will cover you for a and d. I don't think b is covered. For c you may have to take out separate personal accident injury insurance over and above. Someone did mention once that there is some motor insurance scheme which all motor insurers pay into for covering accidents caused by non-insured drivers. Not sure of the details though.
