....which, when I first heard the song ages ago, I somehow presumed was a cycling reference (1967 and all that) until the penny later dropped and I realised it must refer to Joe Simpson of Touching the Void fame. Oops.

It's from "Handsome Devil", I think. Some top lyrics have come from the pen of Morrissey down the years, such as "'I know you and you cannot sing'; that's nothing, you should hear me play piano" (and also the surreal "sponge and a rusty spanner" line) from The Queen Is Dead, "writing frightnening verse to a buck-toothed girl in Luxembourg" from Ask, and the John Betjeman-esque references to "the seaside town that they forgot to bomb" in his solo offering Everyday is Like Sunday. Quality stuff.
