no idea about what's the lightest, but I really highly rate Avid mechanicals. I've replaced all my hydros with them.0

I'm confused :? ... why would people go from having hydraulics back to mechanical disc brakes? Aren't we always told to avoid mechanicals and go for hydraulics if we possibly can ... what with mechanicals having their reputation for being difficult to set up / adjust / maintain etc ... and hydraulics with supposedly superior stopping power and hassle-free maintenance?
That said ... my own experience doesn't entirely reflect the above theory ... my cable disc brakes on my previous bike were fine, and whilst they needed adjusting every so often, it wasn't a hassle ... and my current hydraulics have had to go back to be re-bled 3 times (usually after I've turned the bike upside down to service the chain & gears etc) ... and my lads' bikes both have cable-disc set-ups and they're much sharper and snappier (in a good way) than some hydraulics I've tried ...
... nevertheless ... I'm suprised that people are making a choice to go from hydraulic to mechanical / cable ... and wondered what the reason is for this ...?0 -
power, reliability and ease of setup/maintenance made the decision for me! Bit like your own experiences by the sound of things!0

I'm curently using BB5 with 2 x 160mm rotors.
The stopping power is enough for me because I'm light person. If i want more I'll buy new 203mmm rotors or go to BB7.
Advantages: they don't need bleeding (easier to set the cable/wire), wich decreases the risk of contaminating the rotors or pads, they don't leak, cheaper to maintain (like new caliper, rotor, not sure about pads).
Disadvantages: they need to be adjusted frequently like moving the pads closer as they wear, not that powerfull like most of the hydros.0 -
Hey xtreem u right....my mate's bike got front brake bleed, that why i need mechanical disc brake lightest......0

Where abouts are you from if you don't mind my asking.
And why do you want the lightest? Unless you have the lightest of the light all carbon fibre XC bikes saving a few grams with some lighter brakes will make no difference. You should just go with the best, stopping wise, you can afford.0
