sintered wet and muddy.
organic dry."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

i use sintered all of the time, loads of power and more reliable in my opinion than organic ones. i like ebc gold and particularly swissstop 9but they are pricey)0

I use Organic but with varied success, I've just been through a set of Avid pads in under 4 weeks... and at £14 a pop that's not cheap. I've just got four pairs for less than £20 from http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/index.ph ... c24142ecdf
So far I have no complaints... in front and back right now... 2 weeks still plenty of life left in em... at less than a fiver a time they can last 4 weeks and still they will save me money over the Avid ones. They also produce a Sintered version but had sold out when i bought them.
I'm checking every other day for the stock on the Sintered, i'll use them as things get messier...'to give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift' Steve Prefontaine

Sintered for now to carry you through winter and switch to Organics in Spring.
I've used Superstar pads with varying sucess. Their quality control isn't the best. I've had ones with broken material and some where they seem to have rusted off the backs, also a pair I left in my damp Camlebak rusted and fell off the backing. I know that seems bad but I go through dozens of sets a year. The ones that look good in the pack are pretty good, semi-sintered I'd call them, organic with what looks to be like flakes of copper in them.0 -
so i take it organic pads are more prone to wear in the winter months from the wet conditions ?0
-
haha, im so pleased i just bought some organic ones today then!
the guy in the LBS said they would be best and the sintered ones take a while to warm up... suposed to be a good shop.0 -

sintered pads produce more heat than resin as well.0

I use a semi sintered pad, works great all year round, made by quad i think. The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

a brand new set of organics lasted half way around (a very wet) Afan. mind you they were freebies from last years mayhem.
I use sintered all the time.--

il be keeping an eye on wear rates then!0

Went through a set of Superstar Avid Juicy organics in only half of a wet & gritty Dalby (about 16 miles! ). I'm also keeping a look out for the sintered ones when they come in stock & sent them an email yesterday to enquire when they would be back in stock. I've used only sintered in the past with no problems.
Anybody know about ceramic pads? I've seen them advertised on Ebay as replacement pads. Never seen them before this week. :?0 -
Ok now Im worried, we're off to Afan at the end of Oct for 4 days (lets say 3 days riding)
I've got my stock Giant MPH pads in at the moment, with about a third remaining, and I have 2 pairs of Superstar standard pads ready to replace them.
Am I going to need more for a wet Wales over 3 days on the trails?
Dont want to get there and be in trouble!"I don't do double-entendres, but I do like to slip a big one in occasionally"

I'm a big boy, and take more stoping than most, but its always advisable to carry at least a couple of spare sets... Not ridden Afan, so can't compare, but up in the Dark Peak, its basically grinding paste you are riding on/ thro! I dont think Afan is that gritty.0

Riding around Afan can compare to the Dark peaks, there can be a lot of sandy mud around.I've got my stock Giant MPH pads in at the moment, with about a third remaining, and I have 2 pairs of Superstar standard pads ready to replace them.

Probably, though if you prepare them well they may last. Try heating the pads before use, this dries them and makes them harder. you may get more miles from them.--

or you overheat them and the friction material fall off."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

i got my pads from ebay seller 'Bikefridge'
sintered for the front were just over a tenner i think and the normal medium compound rears were around a fiver, with a couple of quid postage, arrived next day and very pleased with them!
good power from the fronts too!Timmo.

Cheers guys - for safety sake I will take 2 full bikes worth of pads with me (4 Pairs)
Dont want to be sitting around if I cant get hold of any pads while there!
My spare set here are Superstar standard/organic pads.
Should I be looking for sintered pads? - Superstar dont do my model in sintered, so would need to look elsewhere if I do.

Have since changed to EBC gold pads, much better!

That is insane.
Somebody manufacturing these is having a laugh at our expense. My Avid organics got me through last winter (just) though having read these Ill be taking spare pads with me as this winter comes along. Although I have never toasted a set in one ride but my bikes are lightish and I weigh about 80kg infact I barely go through a set every three to 6 months.....of course that could mean I am not riding in shite conditions enough....hmmmm
No hang on I have worked it out, the scarring on my arms and legs tells me I that I am sharing my braking out with the aid of trees and the ground, I always was good at sharing...Scott Ransom 10

I was always (and still am) very selfish. I'm err about 30kg heavier than you... Did a ride round Nidderdale the other day and pads lasted all the way at 30 miles. Think a lot has to do with the initial bedding in as well as the area you ride. Had the brakes litterally smoking at the end of Shooting house descent. (nidderdale)0

I dont understand it though as Im still on my original Giant MPH pads which come with the bike, and Ive had the bike over 2 years now and done untold amount of miles!
Granted though, my off-road shennanigans really only started in the past 5 months, everything before that has been on roads and light toepaths.
Just find it hard to fathom that I may possibly go through 2 sets in an weekend when I get to Wales!!
Not that I mind, because Im going to be hammering the downhills as much as my body will let me!

I know what I meant anyway!

Skyline Cyles at Glyncorrwg and Afan sell pads, and there are some in the Afan centre as well.--
