Ni-Mh charging/discharging

OK - this is a bit nerdy techie - but I'll ask anyway. I've a Cree Q5 bar mounted lamp that runs off 3 x AA Ni-Mh batteries. I've also got smart charger that charges either 2 or 4 battery at a time. Now am i going to struggle here because...... if I stick 4 batteries in the charger and only 3 of them are discharged - will the charger cut out too soon as its detected one battery thats obviously reached full capacity quicker than the others?
Unfortunately the charger doesn't have a discharge facility.
The only way I can think to get round this is by discharging the 4th battery by sticking it in somesort of appliance that takes just 1 AA battery.
Anyone got any pearls of wisdom for this one??

check the charger manual, it might do what i think is called, "trickle charge?" if it does 4 at a time independantly? my old £20 ansmann one does. i do 4 at a time and just use 2 in my lights at random that way they kind of get used evenly over time.0
