wheel bearings - how do I know if they are OK?

I have Bontrager SSRs on a 4 month old Trek 1.7.

Was riding this morning, and kept feeling that something on the bike was "binding".

When I got home I took the wheels off, and can't decide if the hubs are ok. There seems to be a slight "rumble" when I spin the hubs by hand (both front & back), and the rear wheel in particular doesn't spin freely for very long. I wondered if this was down to the rubber seals on the outside of the hubs.

Have probably only done 1,000 miles or so on the bike.

Ideas?

ok you need to strip them down and have a look.

BUT as the bike is so new i would be popping back to the shop with it to find out what is going on.

If the bearings are cone and cup type there is good info on Park tools. Linky below.

if they are cartridge bearings it will be a replace as it is easier.

But a rumble is normally, worst case, pitted cones/cups.

agree - but could also be just over tight cones - worth a check given the bike's (and therefore wheels?) age...
