Something broke in my shimano Tiagra STI gear change lever(rear), it felt like the cable snapping but was'nt. Now it will only change in one direction,up the gears. This happened to anyone else? How easy are these stripped/repaired/broken bits replaced? Was on my way to Promotions Cycle Sale in Edinburgh and the guy there said you can buy the levers from Simano dealer to save some cost. Any input much apprieciated.  :(

From the sound of it, it's probably toast - the internals are too fiddly to service and you'll need a new lever. Try looking on ebay for a spare - plenty of people crash and end up with a spare as single levers are often as expensive as a pair.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • Sorry to hear that, holmeboy. As Monty said, probably easiest to find a replacement one rather than try getting it repaired. Unless it's still under any warranty that is?.

Slightly "on topic" - How was the Edinburgh Promotions sale?. Any good?. I spotted it advertised in a few magazines in the run up to this month.

Was going to go through but it was such a nice day I decided to ( ok, the missus insisted  ) that I cut the grass and do typical Sunday gardeny thingies today, until I got bored and escaped for a quick 25 miler with a mate. 8)

Any bargains at the sale?. Wot's it like at these things?.

  • I would really recommend it, although they only come to Edinburgh once a year.Last year i bought among other thing complete shimano wheels with tubes and tyres on for a good price. They basically have everything clothing, spares and accessories, the warm up area in Meadowbank was filled with it all. Could have got replacement Tiagra levers for £109. This years purchases were shoes 2 sets of pedals (all shimand SDR), 2 chains, sets of replacement brake pads (jagwire), 2 X muc off sprays for £8, replacement cables and more. I reckon you'll be hard pushed to find it cheaper anywhere else. It was chocka though there were queuing to get in. The've also got a Web site cycle-promotions.co.uk though don't know if stuffs as cheap there as a lot of stuff is on Sale. Hopefully you'll make it next year. :D  8) :x
  • Oh yeah to update levers, Removed and taken off back brake part of lever. Got schematic from Shimano web site but unfortunatly it does'nt show you inside the gear part. Looks loike you can remove a plate and the front screw to access selection area but you're all probally right, that when i remove that all the springs/ratchets etc are going to spring out, will take it to work and do it there. Found various web sites selling for £59.99 for new lever. :x   :( :?
  • Thanks for that info.

I'll try and get there next year, to be honest although i had seen it advertised I totally forgot it was this weekend, otherwise I would have went through for a wee look.

I'll have a look at their website though, ta. 8)
