difference between sleeve joint and welded rims?
Hi all, i'm looking to built up a pair of wheels and like the look of Halo Aerorage rims but would like to know the difference between a sleeve joint (as in the Halo rim) and a welded joint (as in mavic open pro). It a sleeve joint weaker and less reliable than a welded joint or vise versa? It it something i should consider when looking at rims? Does anyone have experience with Halo road rims?
Any help appreciated.

I think welded is in theory, better, and Open Pro's are very hard to beat.0

aren't the open pros pinned then welded?
I'd just buy the mavics, they're very good.0 -
From the Mavic web site
SUP welding (Soude Usine Process)After bending, the rim joint is arc welded. The welded seam is then milled for a smooth finish.
_Strength of the rim up to 90% at the weak point seam vs. 60% on a pin-joint rim.
_Eliminate shuddering when braking
_Easier wheel building for a more balanced wheelset
Open Pro's are top quality rims, used them for years, perfect!0 -
OPs do take some beating and I'd happily accept that welded rims are better, in theory, but whether in practice it makes any difference could be open to discussion.
I've never had a pinned rim fall apart anyway, and I've done plenty of rough riding in the past (offroad tours etc.). I usually buckle/change/ding them before they actually un-pin themselves.Facts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0 -
in the MTB world we are moving away from the pinned and welded rim to pinned and sleeved.
sleeved have an insert bonded on the inner profile and some can also have pin joints.
I have been using Halos sleeved Freedom rims and have trashed them but the join has held.
Giant UK DH team also use them.
what the Aerorage rims are like i can not say as i have not used them, Yet."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
