Does anyone know what kind of shoes are used for cyclo-cross?

mtb shoes with spds? or do they just use normal road cleats? eg. look, time etc.?

I know I couldnt run a metre with my look cleats!

Would love to see anyone attempt cyclo cross with their carbon soled Looks on.....

You'd never be able to run, and if you ever managed to clip in with muddy cleats - you'd have a hell of a job getting out again.

Yeah MTB shoes are definitely the way to go. I always found Atacs to cope better with mud than SPDs did.

or crank bros like getting mucky

I can second this. I use Crank Bros Quattro road pedals with my Specialized road shoes. On my last triathlon I got a calf cramp on the cycle phase and had to dismount to stretch it out. I ended up digging my cleats into a muddy grass verge while I stretched my calf. The cleats got completely gummed up with turf, and I had absolutely no trouble at all clipping in (and later out) when I got back on the bike.
  • the only thing to watch for with the crank bros is sudden and unannounced complete failure...

that said mine are second hand and are fine so far!
  • Definitely MTB shoes - though some Swiss riders back in the late 80s/early 90s did try Look road pedals. This was before the ATAC/SPD era, mind you.
Choose your MTB shoe carefully, though - some have quite a 'crowded' sole around the cleat area and might need trimming with a Stanley knife to achieve smooth, quick entry and exit for 'cross racing. Also, off-road shoes with removable studs (like the ones in footie boots) or spikes are handy for difficult running sections in a race.

I hope that no-one minds me jumping on this old thread rather than starting a new one...

Anyone got any specific examples? I'm currently using my Specialized Tahoe shoes, but they are starting to wear out. They also worked quite well when it was drier due to the rubberized sole and tred, but now are just clogging with mud. I'm using Time ATAC pedals, and I'm pretty pleased with these.

So I'm looking for something (I think) that's not too expensive, will dry out quickly and not hold water, has a sole that's flexible enough to run with, allows the use of toe studs and will allow easy entry and exit to time ATAC pedals.

    Cheers,
