Sore Knees

As I posted in an earlier thread some friends and I did the C2C last weekend.

Fitness wise I was fine (thanks to a lot of training) however I did suffer badly from sore knees.

I had been used to riding circa 100 miles per week in my training sessions for several months (4 x 25 miles per week) with no problems so can't understand why I suffered as I did.

I was using some cages on my pedals that I had only used for about 2 weeks before the trip with no problems.

My saddle was set so that I had a slight kink in my leg when the pedal was at the bottom of the stroke, but I did raise it slightly at the end of the 2nd day and my leg was still not completely straight. I didn't feel like I was over stretching in the new position.

So can anyone help with suggestions as to what caused my knee pain?

Dave

Depends where your knee pain is... Give me more of a clue and I might be able to offer some thoughts....

  • Basically the area below my kneecaps was sore and there was some swelling. Also on the outside of my leg at knee height was very painful.

Symptoms of ligament injury is basically swelling & pain & there is one just below the knee connecting to tibia. If you look at the anatomy no wonder they're so vulnerable, even in low impact sports like cycling.

Just below your kneecap sits your Patella tendon, usual causes of patella tendonitis (caused by cycling) are: Seat too low, seat too far forward or pushing too big a gear.

  • Thanks for the replies all.

Sorry for the length of time for my reply but I've been away from my pc for a few days (apparently there's a big world out there)!!

I think there maybe an issue with my saddle height so I'm going to have a play with that.

    Cheers Dave
  • Hi,

My right knee is sore having ridden on average 4 days a week (26 miles return) to/from work over the past 6 weeks. I feel like I need to constantly extend it (when seated at my desk) and sometimes it makes a cracking or clicking sound when I do so. Its the knee cap that makes that sound; as well, I can feel it when it click/cracks.

What do I need to do to treat it? In the past, time off fixed it, but I want to still be able to ride three days a week if 4 is too many. Any suggested treatments?

    Thanks,
    Brent

  • Put your saddle up. Most cyclists are a tad ignorant of how high a saddle needs to be. Others just have it low because they think it looks cool. When sitting in the saddle your leg should reach down to a pedal (pushed completely to the bottom if that makes sense) and only be slightly bent. Not a great explanation i know but basically try the saddle higher!

  • I'd recover to be honest. You don't want the pain or the problem getting worse because then you could be out for weeks or months with a more serious problem. Give your knees a few days rest and see what riding gently does to them and take it from there.

PS. Cycling with the front of your foot on the pedal / your toes on the pedal rather than the back of your foot is correct technique and may help knee pain. This may not be a problem for you though :D

  • By the time I get back on, it will have been six days since I stopped riding. Hopefully by then I'll be okay. I do cycle with the front of my foot, but don't have clips yet.

I bashed my right knee on an MTB splat - two months later it still hurt like crazy.

Saw my physio friend and realised I have a slightly flat right foot, which has also caused an unstable knee joint - the only thing for it was targeted physio which has worked an absolute treat. I now run/do long hikes with shoe inserts with really help.

It's nothing too major but it was nice to sort it out.
Very similar area to where your pain is - might be worth seeing a good sports physio if the saddle adjustment doesn't work?

it does sound like your patella, however there are many many causes besides the ones listed here. Mine was due to muscle inbalance in my quads, but apparently it can be affected by unbalance in muscles as removed as the glutes.

The best thing would be to see a physio, ideally one with a sports background.

Ride - one of my physio exercises is specifically for the glutes - they support the knee joint. Seems odd but it's true!
