Mine was 15mph over 11.8 miles each way today. What's yours?
On a road bike. Up some hills. Do I get adjustment for being a girl?
Emerging from under a big black cloud. All help welcome

  • lol you average speed depends on how many hills there are and how windy it is, only my morning commute i average between 17-19mph but on the way back i only average about 15mph, that is mainly thanks to the constant headwind and more uphill

My avg is usually around 18mph going in, around 17 coming back - the hills are steeper going home. That's on a 20.5 mile hack each way on a light road bike. I cracked the 20 mph avg today though - see Getting The Commute Time down thread.

Do I get an adjustment for being a bit on the porky side?
    :)

    Yesterday evening:
    http://sportstracker.nokia.com/nts/workoutdetail/index.do?id=431715

8 miles, 11.5mph. It's all uphill and I blew up with calf cramps towards the end as, at the start, I'd been trying to keep pace with a guy who was clearly 5-6mph faster than me and overdid it

    This morning:
    http://sportstracker.nokia.com/nts/workoutdetail/index.do?id=432692

7 miles, 14.8mph. It's usually faster but I got stuck behind an annoying stop-start bus that didn't stop long enough each time for me to overtake it safely. Eg: a previous morning:
http://sportstracker.nokia.com/nts/workoutdetail/index.do?id=431035 - more like 16mph on the same route.
Today is a good day to ride

From your map that looks like the Antrim Road in Belfast.

Bought my first bike in Beverly Cycles in Carnmoney many years ago when I was a mere 16 year old (18 years ago). A 12 speed Raleigh Scorpio, bought with my first pay packet from a lousy summer job (3 weeks wages it was)

Recall one horrible trip on the Antrim Road, which is disceptively steep. 35mph on the way down, thought I was Sean Kelly, turned at Carlise Circus to come back up and the legs just stopped turning. Took forever to get home.

Lost interest in cycling when I went to Uni in Coleraine , discovering beer and nicotine instead

Aiming to get out on the bike this weekend for the first time in a decade, having picked up a Specialized Hardrock as a bargain on Ebay. Probably not the most suitable commuter but getting on the road a cheap as poss was the priority.

14-16mph average speed, which is entirely to do with traffic lights and wind direction. But I suppose everyone has to put up with them.

My best time for the full commute is just over 52 (rolling) minutes to work and back, about 14.2 miles. Did a sub-54 yesterday which is maybe my second best - I just had it, for some reason. I like days like that.

@WheezyMcChubby yep, Antrim Road indeed. It doesn't look steep when you're on it, but I can fairly easily crank my MTB to 25mph+ on the way down. I put the route into BikeHike and it showed a general 2-3% gradient but with enough 10% sections to hurt.

Not sure where you are now, but Beverly Cycles is still where it was! The guy who runs it puts me to shame - he's 60 if he's a day but regularly enters local 100ks.

Good on you getting back on the bike. I just got back in the saddle a few months ago after 10+ years away. Now I don't know why I ever quit.

  • Averaging 15mph for my 8 mile each way trip on country roads = 200yds of cycle track one way.
Reckon my free bus pass is slowing me down.

About 13.4mph including stops, a weedy 5.7 miles each way across North London (I prefer to think of it as 9km...) http://www.bikely.com/listpaths/by/msw

  • My commute

8.5 miles from deepest SW London to just shy of Kings X - average speed is very dependent upon a variety of factors including wind, traffic, traffic lights (no RLJing) and of course my legs. Usually somewhere between 15-18mph average. Best time ever was last month during the school holidays - 28m 04s.

Typical average speed for my 9.1 mile back roads rural commute is 16-17mph. Done on a fixed Salsa Casseroll with Carradice saddlebag. Lovely bike.

Best average is around 25mph, on my geared road bike. Dont know what i had eaten the day before, but ive not got close to that many times since, on either bike!!!
  • Average between 14 - 16 mph on a ridgeback cyclone on 7.4 miles commute to and 7.9 - 15 miles fro. The faster speeds are reached coming back though as l am on main roads more rather than cycle paths on my way in.

When l extend my route in the evening, the average speed remains the same even with a little incline (latchmere road SW2) thrown in  . Maximum speed reached so far was 28 MPH on the stretch between Clapham North Station and Stockwell Station in S. London.

Hey Linsen. Unless everyone's doing the same commute on the same bike in the same conditions the figures really don't mean much! I'm sure you know that already, but just a reminder not to get hung up on the math or the competitive posturing.

That said: 17.1mph average for my last commute, so I beat you, yeah!
'07 Langster (dropped one tooth from standard gearing)
'07 Tricross Sport with rack and guards
STUNNING custom 953 Bob Jackson *sigh*
  • I usually get anything between 18mph and 22mph depending on the wind on my 15 mile commute over the hills of Devon. Not managed anything better than 22.8 and that was a very windy day!
'07 Focus Izalco Expert - Hairy Baggy Shorts Roadie (FCN 5)
'02 Marin Bear Valley - MTB on Nobblies (FCN 9)

  • 40mph average over a 3000 mile commute on a uni-cycle, pretty dis-appointed that can only get max speed of 75 mph up-hill, but ah well
